There was nothing like it as a kid. You start the game off…. And you better get your broke ass to work mining those rocks. And if you finally git gud at mining (man that felt incredible finding some rich veins didn’t it) your reward is being able to afford to explore interstellar space for the first time. And then there are many alien races to discover who have different ways you need to approach them. And all the while you are following clues across the galaxy and trying to solve a larger meta mystery.

Absolutely magical. And there’s never been anything quite like it since then, but please let me know if there is.

Star Control 2 is probably the most similar. It's available for free, renamed for trademark reasons, as "The Ur-Quan Masters".

Starflight is great. It had a sequel too but I haven't tried it.
Also check out Sentinel Worlds I: Future Magic and its sequel Hard Nova.
There's also Space Rogue and the much later Escape Velocity games though they feel more like the Elite games than Starflight.

I always start by selling enough Endurium to upgrade to a Class 3 Engine which doesn't waste as much fuel. Then I go visit the nearby planets where the billboard says there are ruins. I do a bit of mining there.
But I don't have to minegrind if I'm finding habitable planets and reporting back. With the Elowan on my side I'm unsure I even have to mine at all; just keep selling Endurium. Gets better when the ship is upgraded to the level I can beat the shit out of Spemin.

If you didn't play the Amiga version you didn't beat the game.

It’s not the space whales game, that’s starglider 2 (picrel). My mistake, easy mistake. Both games look fucking fantastic, starflight 2 looks on par with star control 2 in the alien department. I’d also like to add b.a.t (bureau of astral troubleshooters) b.a.t. 2 for alien interactions and sci fi fan service.

Every game in this thread is decent to stellar. It’s not our fault you have a low iq. People with higher iqs tend to like the statistics involved with management/sim games. It’s the reason Normans can’t into simulation games. Even when everybody was like “ohh I love simcity2000” 90% of them just cheated and put shit in random places, then destroyed their cities with disasters. Go do a barrel role, slippy and let the adults barter slaves with space Jews.

It's a little older than Star Control II and plays more like an RPG.

A Sega Genesis game? Released in 1991? "Decades ahead of its time"?

Are you fucking kidding me?

I love the manual and map that came with Starflight.

The original PC version was written in Forth and contained self-modifying code so if you didn't make backups before saving you couldn't start a new game since saving changed the game disk.

Starflight also had a pretty complex system for interacting with aliens. A lot of your actions, even the timing of your actions, and other factors affected the aliens' disposition towards you and their talkativeness.

This is what happens if you wait too long to transition fellas, you just become old and bitter.

Yes sperg, it was during an era where the most complex shit we had was Dragon Quest. It was phenomenal. Also, home computers were the toys of the insanely wealthy back then, so don’t be such a cunt.

That’s an awesome map. And I did play the version on a home PC for a bit, but the idea of self modifying code scared the shit out of me. Also, aliens changing their behavior even depending on how long you took to respond is absolutely bonkers ambitious for an 80s / 90s game. It’s a fucking shame the kickstarter for Star Flight 3 failed. I think one of my biggest lottery dreams is to just plough lots of salary at some talented enthusiasts and let them make the game they always dreamed of. Thanks for uploading that map.

The likes of Elite and 4X in space settings couldn't be more popular today, smoothie.

Elite isn’t a space simulator anymore, not like the way they used to be. It’s super qol mmo and it’s not very popular. you got pubg and Fortnite and battlefront/etc… that’s way more popular. Elite is niche community, always been.

Kek, many average people owned computers and consoles in the late 80s. Even lower middle class people had computers. The economy wasn’t the same as it is today. Unless you were extremely poor or unwilling to adapt to new tech, you had a computer. Most average people didn’t want a computer when they first started getting popular, not that they could get one. People had better judgment calls and abilities to budget within their means. This mass consumer mentality was still in its infancy.

>A Sega Genesis game? Released in 1991? "Decades ahead of its time"?
Starflight was originally released for IBM PC in 1986. A Sega Genesis port was released in 1991.
