So I finally managed to beat this game, after many, many tries. Every time, I just warped straight to World 8 and attempted to beat it with only 4 lives. And I finally did it. Hard as heck, but it was really fun.

It's funny because at this point I would probably find some parts of world 8 easier than the other worlds, simply because I've done them over and over.

How long did it take you to beat Mario 3? Did you usually beat it by playing through the whole thing, or warping?

>> No.1016343

>>1016327

I used to warp, but I decided to do a straight up, one day, no saves run through every world.

It was great, seeing all the cool worlds I missed due to warping.

I did the same for SMB1 and world. I had to use saves for 2(USA, fuck the official ROM).

Actually beat the entire game before a friend showed me the warp flutes. Needless to say I shat everywhere. Got so raged during this world.

I don't know how something as hard as World 8 ends up in a game for kids. Or did they have adults in mind while designing it?

>> No.1016362

as weird as it sounds i found world 3 the hardest. the fucking water, and fish

>> No.1016370

I find this entire game to be incredibly easy. I beat this game when I was in elementary school. And when I play, I prefer to beat every level in every world. No flutes, warping just feels cheap.

>> No.1016378

Yeah, but beating all 8 worlds is quite a lot in one sitting. I always figured the warp whistles were there to act as a save system of sorts.

Everyone knows this I'm sure but it wasn't until recently that I realized the map is in the shape of 3 pipes.

I have never beaten SM3. Even as an adult, ever since I was a child I was fascinated by the big/little levels and always fuck up too much in that zone playing around. I remember the first time I saw level 8 and it was 2 grimdark 4 me at age 6 on my Asian cousins' Game Genie. Congrats, I think I COULD beat World 8, but I wouldn't want to do it by warping because of some bullshit my dad said to me growing up about honor, and I wouldn't devote the time to the game enough to get through everything else.

I've beaten SMB3, and can beat the whole game in about 5-10 minutes thanks to knowing the Warp Whistle locations

I've also beaten SMB2, but still haven't beaten SMB1. I always get to World 8 and die on 8-3 or 8-4

>> No.1017151

A few years ago my roommate and I decided to spend a whole weekend playing SMB3 (played it on the Wii so it "saved" when we turn it off). While it was funny and I recommend it to others I feel I can't touch SMB3 for a LONG time after that.

I practiced the hell out of SMB2J with save states. It conditioned me for just about anything and everything within Mario, everything else became much easier.

I'm not going to say that I've beaten it, because I haven't, but the ability to practice single levels in a world is a amazing. I was actually surprised when I found out how many people in the speed running community use emulators to practice hard parts of a game.

>> No.1017189

I can do a 12:30 speed run, using warps, and about 1:30:xx for 100%. Not really close to WR times or anything, but still pretty impressive to do while normal people watch.

I always like playing through every level without skipping them.
But even if you warp to the 8th world don't you have to at least beat world 1 first, by then you should have tons of lives

>> No.1017546

>>1017093
I think SMB2 (US) is the easiest of the three, personally. I tend to rack up a ridiculous number of extra lives because of the bonus game.

SMB2 (JP) I still need to beat. Fuck, but that game is hard.

SMB1 I used to double beat in a single sitting as a kid, running through the entire game, beating it, and then doing it again with the harder version. I could probably still do it, but nowhere near as skillfully as younger me.

at the very least, you need to play 4 world 1 levels to do the flute warp to world 8, but by the time you have the flutes, 1 mushroom house and 1 spade house should be open, so, there are a few opportunities

>> No.1017596

The World 8 warships made me ragequit. They weren't particularly hard, they just seemed like you had to memorize the levels in order to get through. I could do the first perfectly every time pretty much, but I got pissed when it was more about memorization than reflex

Trying to escape the top of the screen was how you got to the warp zone in smb1. The confusing part is how you were supposed to know there was a door there. (Though the proper door to continue is directly beneath it.)

>> No.1019543

I beat it in about 3rd grade without any flutes, I had no idea they existed. For 3rd grade me W6 was the most infuriating, only world I had to skip a level on,

>> No.1019562

How do people beat it in one sitting, without warps? Obviously it's very possible. But, doesn't that take a really long time? And people always say the game throws tons of lives at you, but not for me....Where do people get all these lives? There are the slot games but those hardly ever match for me, the toad houses but I rarely get 1-ups there, and when you beat three levels, it only gives you a 1-up unless you match three stars, which doesnt happen often

and if you get a game over, you have to start at that world with only 4 lives and thus the rest of the game

>> No.1019617

>>1019562
you end up with a lot of 1-ups just by collecting coins, ideally you shouldn't die at all through world 2

The classic trick is that if you run full speed and jump directly into the card, it gives you a star more often than not. The timing just works out that way.

>> No.1019839

you can also almost always get a fire flower or whatever those are called by starting your run at the edge of the black part, having 3-4 triangle full of the run meter usually gets you the flower

Under 2 hours easily if you are good, thats every level though your mileage may vary depending on how much exploration you do. Going in for the very first time I wouldnt expect you to finish it under 4-5 hours, and that assumes you dont get frustrated on some of the more difficult levels.
