Awakening easily. Love that game to bits. Did not care for the remake, it felt like a missed opportunity to do another top down style game and maybe kick off a new series of Zelda games.

As for the rest of the series, I've played most of them, but beaten very few of them. At this point I'm much more likely to play someone doing a "Shovel Knighting" of the top down Zeldas than anything Nintendo do with the series proper.

man the way the grass sprites bump up against the bottom of the rocks in the black and white version and get cut off is super ugly. at least DX is able to sell that jarring transition better with color.

I've tried but I can't stand any other them. The 2D ones are just mediocre and the later 3D ones have a creepy unsavoury paedophilic undertone. They just are not very good games, really simple 'puzzles' so children can solve them and a lot of back and frothing. One of the most overrated franchises in gaming history that lives in the stable of Nintendo mediocrity for young children with anxious(but slightly creepy parents if they bought zelda) parents beside donkey kong and mario

Link's awakening was purposely made to be as criptic as possible. All the absurd trade chain you have to do. Impossible to finish without a guide or extreme luck. I consider it bad game design.

Breath is the first game since the original that made me feel like I was just airdropped into a vast hostile world and it was on me to figure everything out. I'm shocked at the hostility it receives on this site in general.

But since that's not retro, I will say LoZ. I also like AoL a lot and Majora.

For me, it's 2. I got into the biz myself and Zelda 2 and God Hand are two of my three biggest influences. They both just have flawlessly designed, tough but fair curves. Plus I love that continent-spanning exploration aspect of Zelda 2. There's nothing better than trekking across the vast ocean and landing at a distant, but massive mysterious new land and even the basic critters are completely different from what you know.
