Sometimes I forget how bad the GBA soundchip can be, especially in regards to picrel and its sequels. I feel sorry for the nips who had to experience the normally godlike OST bitcrushed to hell and back

>GBA soundchip
It's just an old Game Boy soundchip backed up by a CPU rendering low bitrate audio in software. There's no such thing as "GBA soundchip".

Imwonder how they managed to get games like Mother 3 sound sound as good as it did if that ws the case

It just cannot imagine playing Phoenix Wright 1-3 on an unlit 2.9" GBA screen. Some of those cases are long as hell.

Japanese is much harder to read at lower resolutions than English too.

problem isn't entire the sound chip, a lot of problems go back to terribly written audio drivers that can't do multichannel mixing properly without severe quality loss and the use of very low sampling rates to save on rom space.

Mother 3 is a 32 MiB game. There's enough space for higher quality audio samples.

The intro to "The Evil King Bowser" got pretty butchered.

Then, of course, there's Spinball's options menu which is kind of a catch-22 in that, as grating as they can be, the "coils" do add to the song; see any reconstruction that removes/heavily lowers them.

Also, not as grating but with no excuse of actually having a clear rhythm:

Spinball Options gets a bad rep from 2000s emulators (including official ones from Sega) not emulating low pass filters present in real audio chips (especially on Model 1 consoles), producing really grating unfiltered sound.

There is a little bit of hardware to handle the two PWM channels that digital sound on the GBA outputs to, but yeah otherwise it's mixed in software.

>>10160817
That and it's an RPG, so the CPU is usually more free to spend time outputting sound at a higher/cleaner bitrate, although the samples still aren't played back at the same quality they're stored at in Mother 3.

I don't remember having any issues with music in GBA attorneys, but anything that was ported from Genesis to that console was instant ear-crusher. With exception of Rock'n Roll Racing maybe but including Comix Zone, that port was SHIT.

Can't you save inbetween the trials?

The Duke 3D theme sounds awesome, unless you're playing it through a really primitive soundcard, in which case it makes you want to rip your ears off.

Similarly, Monkey Island without any soundcard through your internal speaker.

Does all of the mixing happen in the chip where we can't touch it outside of software? Like is the dac inside of that bitch?

You are given a hard save every time court calls for recess (a few times a case) and you can make a suspend save whenever you want by hitting start.
