sold my Jag to finance my Saturn so i went from Jag Doom to Saturn Doom and oh boy did i regret that transition.
yeah i had underdog consoles too but i don't feel bad about that, i'd say my biggest fuck up was to sell them.
should've harassed my mom to keep the old ones with the new ones.

Never. Always picked what I believed were the best consoles, kept all of them and still use them regularly.

>> No.10156218

I begged my parents for months to get me Harry Potter for PS1 and ended up getting it on Christmas. Not to say that I didn't enjoy it, it's a pretty fun game, but I probably could have gotten a way better game than that.

I also heavily regret trying to get into Gamecube collecting at the start of the pandemic. Everyone here called me a retard and to just mod my Wii. I eventually caved and I'm so glad everyone here called me out on it. Still ending up losing a shitload of money though because I obviously couldn't sell what I had already bought at the same price.

>not buying a 2nd Vectrex for 100, had one i got for free, but no controller, all i wanted was a controller, dumb ass me didn't realize the controller alone is like 200 and i could have gotten a spare system

>not buying Pokemon Box when Nintendo Power advertised it. I knew about it right at release, i could have ordered it online, i knew it would be rare some day, but i still never bought it despite wanting it. Did the same shit with the 64DD and the english version of Faseli when neogeo pocket stuff was being liquidated

>buying Wizardry 5 for snes for 10 bucks instead of Stunt Racer for the n64 for 5. I was looking for it back then because i assumed it was an StuntRace FX sequel, was glad to find it, then put it back cause i wanted an RPG. Sure, its not a great game, but its the last 64 game i want from the US library.

>not getting the Mother 3 GBA Micro. Already had the Famicom Edition, didn't really like the M3 ones design, couldn't justify at the time getting a 2nd Micro. Now my autism wishes i had it, especially cause the screen on the Micro i had got scratched.

For some reason I opted to buy an original gameboy when the gameboy color was out. I don't know why I did that. I think I thought the original GB games looked stupid with the GBC color palettes, which they did, but then I didn't get to play Wario Land 3.

I'd say it's rough around the edges. Gameplay is sorta random, but you can open the door and walk the dinosaur, then shoot them, like in the movie. The music kicks ass.

I never could get past 2nd boss fight (if you can even call it a boss) because of how poor is CPU's response when you try to move it away from running triceratops. Limited continues were also bullshit.

I got some really good NES games out of it, but it did mean I was stuck with that godawful rectangle hurting my hands for another 3 years. I also ended up missing out on some of the better early SNES titles until I rented or years later when I got used copies at Funcoland, like ALttP, Demon's Crest, Actraiser, Super Metroid, Mega Man X, Aladdin, F-Zero, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, etc. I still wish I had a copy of Super Mario All-Stars as a kid. I would have loved to play through SMB3 with a save feature, and challenge every level in the game instead of having to use warp whistles or just turn the console off when it got late.

I don't remember ever fucking up with asking games for Christmas/birthdays, but I did sometimes chose poorly when was picking up cartridges and discs with my own pocket money.

That was especially relatable in mid-90s since I grew up with Famiclone and parents didn't buy me mags to read about new games released. I could only learn about some games by rumors coming from classmates (i.e. "there is a le cool Ninja Turtles game where they are at beach") or by blindpicking cartridges with the most insane cover arts you've seen, taking risks and hoping it would actually be cool. I've soon realized the sad truth: the cooler the cover arts are, the lamer games inside are. Don't ever trust anything that says 100 in 1 or even 20 in 1.

Then I've got Dreamcast and new PC and it all came to a new level of brain fuckery. When I came to the game store to pick my first PC game, I've spend around 40 mins there and my brain gears were about to go loose from all the stress, I'VE HAD NO FUCKING IDEA what all these games are and what to buy.
I've bought Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project
And it was awesome

Let's see

NES:
- got Iron sword because the magazine screenshots looked cool, game plays like shit
- got castlevania 2, didn't like it and swapped it for Gremlins 2.... game was alright but not great
- got TNMT like every other kid, was kinda dissapointed by it that it did not match the cartoon at all. Game itself wasn't that bad though.

also:
I wanted Zelda 2 because a friend had it as well and it looked amazing, The store didn't have it anymore but still had Zelda 1. Bought that thinking I could play a side scrolling adventure game... almost started crying when I found out how different it was. After a while I realised I got the better game though.

SNES:
- got road runner on snes because I liked the cartoon, boy what a dissapointment
- got super star wars because fuck knows why, hadn't even seen any of the movies yet and the game turns out to be way too hard

Things got much better after that though as I grew up and was able to make proper choices.

I'm in a pal zone but I remember they probably cleared out the 8 bit stuff in about 1996. It was different back then because if stuff didn't sell they would just leave it on the shelf for years. My target was still selling the Atari Lynx in about 1996 and the games were extremely cheap, it was just that no one was buying them but I still have the boxed systems and small no of games. I was pretty disappointed coming from gameboy until I found the good games many years later.
That same Target also had a boxed brand new snes just sitting on the shelf for years for the equiv of about $70 us. It took about till 2003 till someone brought it but everytime I went it was just sitting in the corner with snes pac man.

Your only real options at that point are the Colecovision and the Atari 7800. The 7800 is more powerful, but I think that the Colecovision has a better library (both are backwards compatible with the 2600 although the coleco needs and adapter). If you can get over your burning hatred of PCs you might be interested in the MSX computers as a lot of its games came on cartridge and used a gamepad.

I'm glad I was bestowed the Saturn on that fateful day, followed by the Dreamcast just a short few years later.
As an adult, the nostalgia of those two consoles is one of my few joys and seems to be shared amongst others a bit obsessed with plundering the history of Sega at that time.
Dunno if it would be the same if I'd gone in on Sony from day one. It's a bit like when I think back to WCW rasslin' (I watched that over WWF as a kid). After all, anything good has to die eventually, lest you see it become old and ultimately irrelevant.

WWF basically went the same way after the name change in 2002, i still hear people use that instead of WWE.

Not a Christmas thing, but I had a used copy of Suikoden II in my hands for $35 but I put it back because I wanted to find and play the first game before it and figured it'd still be at the shop when I went back.

I chose to forego getting a new game one Christmas to get the power glove instead. I used to get one game at Christmas and one on my birthday, and that was it. So this was a major setback thay fucked me for many months. I learned a lesson about marketing though

kek reminds me of when i spazzed out when i saw a street vendor selling cheap dollar store crash bandicoot watches. I way oversold my need for it because i wanted it then and there. I almost teared up faking a smile as I unwrapped it for christmas, thinking I just did myself in with a dollar store gift over a new game, or vhs tape or hot wheels washing machine. I brightened up as my cousins got games though because it meant i'd get to try them out.

I've jokingly called my mom out on that as an adult but i regret saying anything
