10 years is too long for this experiment. I'd beat and get tired of everything within 1-2 years and then completely lose my sanity. Make it 3-5 years and I think I could make something work.

I'd definitely go GBA, Genesis and PS2 though. GBA has so many underrated games and with it being one the cheaper options I think I could build a good library, PS2 has a lot of longer games and diverse content and Genesis would be just for nostalgia purposes.

The best option is obviously the PS2 due to being backwards compatible with 99% of the PS1 library, unless there's an arbitrary rule against backwards compatibility. I'm aware there's two other backwards compatible systems on the list but the Master System doesn't have that many good games and while gameboy games are good, I feel like I wouldn't get that much playtime from them since I'm personally not a huge pokemon fan

NES, SNES, Megadrive. I'd buy 42 games for each console, focusing on games that were very difficult but also very fun. Maybe a few games like Zelda or Final Fantasy for variety and length too. I would spend that time learning how to 1cc all of the games. I'd probably be done within 2 years.

PSX is a steal at that price and it had some very long games, some great replayable action games, some ports of very replayable PC games, and some arcade compilations.
There is space for 73 PSX games.
I'm more of a N64 guy on 5th gen because I don't have that much time to play games and like action but in 10 years of isolation with nothing but video games I would have to pick PSX. Sim City, Civilization, Theme Park, Theme Hospital, there's a lot of simulations to learn, there's the boring jrpg's that I would force myself to enjoy, there's a few slow turn based strategy games that I would sink a lot of time on, there are a lot of puzzlers, there are the Koei games, dungeon crawlers, fighting games that I would git gud, there are a lot of more realistic racers that demand a lot of time, and so on.
I could also get a NES with a few key games for that price, like 2 for a PSX + 60 games and 400 for a NES + 15 games

>200 hours to complete
Final Fantasy XII alone would occupy AT LEAST 2 years of that time. A perfect save file requires perfect HP/MP. Without RNG manipulation you have to
>kill stuff until close to level up
>save at crystal
>kill something and level
>write down hp/mp gain
>save in 2nd slot
>reset
>do it again
>compare level up values
And repeat. Since new party members scale to your level, the range widens and becomes WAY more time consuming. The only realistic thing to do then is have a LLG (low level game) until after the Leviathan events and you get 6 party members. Then you have to individually level each character, alone, to 99, spending probably 1-8 hours per character depending on how autistic you are and if you already have the max value tables (you don't without internet).

And once you've done that, you can actually start playing the game. What does that mean? Going to the Henne Mines lowest floors and zoning in and out a million times for a Zodiac Spear... and doing that 98 times! You get 1 Zodiac Spear for free in the Necrohol. Proceed to collect 99 Danjuro. Max out gil and step counters too. Gods help you if you forget to obtain the Small Package, Jaya Stick, or max chops. Oh, and 99 Slime Oil from Orthos.

And if you play the IZJS version instead, you can look forward to obtaining 99 Seitengrats. Each one is 1/10000 chance and require probably 40+ hours, totally 4000 hours, +- 3000. With 168 hours a week, dedicating 14 hours a day, you get 98 (let's say 100) hours a week played. That's 40 weeks, about 9-10 months, for one item.

And when you're done with Final Fantasy XII, you can play Dragon Quest VIII where there's a 999 item limit and drop/steal rates are 1/128 or something like that.

I buy poker, blackjack, chess, and backgammon games.
I buy the RPG Maker and Fighter Maker games.
I buy the PS2 Linux kit if it counts as a game.
You said nothing about controllers so I assume I get the keyboard and mouse for PS2.

During the day I write my novels and memoirs via Linux. Failing that, I'll use RPG Maker 2 to enter the text.
Then it's an hour or two of practice in the traditional games, followed by game creation time. If I'm lucky PS2 linux comes with a virtual C++ manual. If not I will content myself with RPG Maker and Fighter Maker.

The rest of the money I will spend on eroge and fitness games.

Read some old threads on FFXII's gamefaqs board, anon. You will see real passion, on par with Ulillillia. Hard to find now a decade later but people really dug deep into the PS2's random number generator and created a reliable way of fixing events based off of specific console models. They made tables for random value ranges and everything. The (non-retro) release of FFXII for PS4 had a RNG method to get a quick Seitengrat that required walking a certain # of steps and casting cure for a certain amount or something like that. How these people figure it out, I don't know. The Ulillillias of the world, whoever they are, are the real protagonists, the Atlas who bear the weight of the world on their magnificent shoulders.

Also I'd get really bored with nothing but FFXII for 10 years to be honest. I'd probably throw in:
>mega man anniversary collection
>mega man x collection
>sonic mega collection
and uh, I don't know, Harvest Moon. OP's pic doesn't specify but if DVDs are allowed for PS2 but they cost $50, I'd still pick at least a dozen. I need to see real human beings and hear their voices. Also CDs.

I'm assuming no backwards compatibility unless stated otherwise?

I definitely need a Sony system, but given the limited budget, I'll have to pick just one. It's really tough, really. There's so many amazing games that the other PlayStation doesn't have, but I'll have to hand it to the PS2:
>FF7 may be my favourite game, but it's not something I need to replay
>Most of the best Mega Drive, Saturn, and Dreamcast games are on PS2
>Has the GameCube multiplats too, which makes GC pretty redundant if you're not a Zelda fan (I'm certainly not)
>PS2 has so many damn games
I love Mario 64 but the N64 as a whole doesn't have a lot of software for me, and I ain't blowing nearly 1/3 of the budget to play one game. The NES isn't worth sacrificing 5 PS2 games (especially not for SMB1), but is the SNES worth the tradeoff? Maybe, cause it's probably Nintendo's best system, but I'm also content with having already played most of the best SNES games.

Yeah, I think I'll put the whole $3,000 into the PS2 and 36 PS2 games.
