They're hit or miss. I think the second zone in Advance 1 is some vague factory place and it's hard to tell what you're looking at. And I know a later game has some sensory-overload Tron type of world that's bound to give you seizures.

There's something weird about colors in Genesis games, they can try to imitate natural or pastel colors but never manage to actually do it. Try comparing Contra, Ristar, Vectorman, Ecco and others to Super Metroid or DKC. There's something different and off about how Genesis games look.

Lol, no here has mentioned it yet but the only reason the water contrasts so much with the sky is due to the devs hiding a bug with the line scrolling on the water. The parallax effect doesn't actually reset properly when the lines reach the edge of their boundaries, so initially when the water *was* the same color as the sky earlier in development you would notice the sparkling light on the surface surface would jump back in position after moving far left enough. However, by making the water a light blue it becomes much harder to actually notice the bug due to some optical illusion fuckery.
