It's just a way to group together games that have certain ideas in common, so people can very easily find similar games to ones they already like.
That's what a "genre" is in the first place. You people always act like there's some hard science to this and there's such a thing as "true genres" and "fake genres".
People just need terms to communicate ideas, because otherwise they can't have a conversation.

Just came from another reality, we call these games Spelunkers.

Feels like it has a better ring to it, you expire, discover, encounter enemies, find shit and upgrade it with stuff that deeper in the maze.

Heck, the Dead Cells crossover Castlevania had recently didn't even scratch Metroid Dread's sales.
Both sold 3 million and were the franchise first.

The fact Dread made all of that on one platform and all the threats piratefags had against the game is an impressive feat for Metroid.

The confusion is because the term "metroidvania" was originally just a tongue-in-cheek way of differentiating older Castlevania games, or "classicvanias", from the newer ones like Symphony of The Night that had a generally much different design that reminded people of Metroid.

I think it was maybe around the time that CV: Lords of Shadow that the CV fandom, or at least a particular subset of it, started insisting that "Metroidvania" is a genre, and your post along with OP's helps demonstrate why it's so dumb. I'm not sure the CV fandom itself has actually settled on a definition even after all this time.

>>10151310
>it's a term forced by nintenfaggots
On the contrary, it was very much the Castle-/IgaVania fanboys who forced it, if anything, I'd imagine the Metroid fandom is annoyed by it, especially when the term gets retroactively applied to their games.

>> No.10153769

>>10153757
metroidvania was originally used as an insult to the new format from old castlevania fans, it became term of endearment because the games are good tho, it wasn't meant to just differentiate.
