1015040 No.1015040 [Reply] [Original]

I'm about to play Diablo for the first time ever. I very rarely play older games and want to know what I'm in for; tips and tricks for beginner players.

I've played to many new games to know what's going to happen. So I'd love to have /vr/ give me some dire heads up on what I'm in for!

Thanks in advance

get hellfire expansion so you can move faster in town

>> No.1015051

I don't think you need special advise. The game is relatively self-explanatory and there's no way to screw up your character beyond repair.
Warrior is strong in the beginning but has the biggest trouble in the last levels. Sorcerer has a rough start but becomes extremely powerful. Rogue falls somewhere in between.

>> No.1015052

>>1015040
DON'T get hellfire. It's not made by Blizzard and its content is very sub-par compared to the original game.

Clear out entire levels. As simple as that.

Watch out for yellow zombies. They permanently decrease your hp when they hit you, use spells/bows only when you see them.

Always have a scroll of town portal or even better learn it from a book so you can cast it for mana.

This, Diablo is very easy to get the hang of. It's also an amazing game, so enjoy the ride.

Warriors should also learn some stronger spells because in the final levels you'll be fighting projectile hurling foes that moves faster than you and retreats when you get in their melee level. So you must force them into corners, which always never works, or use spells to kill them. Also they come in SWARMS.

i think its better than diablo 2

1. Only one dungeon but dont let that discourage you
2. Certain early zombies on the 2nd or 3rd floor can PERMENANTLY low your HP if they hit you
3. There arent many quests, but you cant get all of them in one playthrough
4. Avoid goat fountains but use the other ones

have fun OP

Pretty much all the items are randomly dropped, and that drop depends on several things. Basically, the tougher the monster, the better the item. You'd be lucky to find a book of mana shield any time soon.

Here is a tip. If you just equip a shield, the sorceror swings it pretty damn fast. Go beat some skeletons with a buckler.

Rogue benefits a lot from +all stats than any other character because 1.5 health gain and 1.5 mana gain per 1 point of VIT (items) and MAG (items) + her ranged dmg is based off STR and DEX.

You can't even die in D2 on normal (with very few notable exceptions) unless you go afk or something. D1 will kick you in the balls when you least expect it as soon as level 2-3 of cathedral.
Then again, D2 has hardcore mode and the difficulty gets really insane near the end if you play self-found and don't do 100 boss runs before you move to the next difficulty, so I see what you're saying.

I don't think you can compare D1 normal and D2 normal. In D2 normal difficulty is basically a tutorial, you'd have to play really, really horribly bad to die outside of a few boos fights. in D1 you will die and reload even if you know what you're doing, sometimes when there is defiantly a challenge there, even if you can just save/load. OP here again... accidentally clicked load game instead of save.

>Three hours of gameplay and all that loot. Gone. Just gone.

Going to keep going... not sure if the RNG Gods will be that nice to me ever again.

OP here again. I just killed the same enemies again and they dropped the same stuff I got my last run before I loaded.

Gnarl Root, Needler. Going to see if the other stuff is the same in Catacombs.

The thing that's different about playing Single player is that your dungeon lay out is ALWAYS THE SAME. So I guess maybe that is the same case for monsters and item drops?

Unlike in Battle.net when you create a new room everything is reset from the dungeon layout, minimap, monsters everything. But you can access the furthest cave you've been to (Say catacombs or caves)

Drop it in town. It won't disappear in the single player game.

Protip: Keep armors with good magical resists around. Drop them in town and if you get to a floor in a dungeon in which they chuck either a lot of fire, lightening, or magical attacks just switch armors to complete that floor.

You'll thank me when you are in the caves.

Not at all unless you play on Hellfire.

Try to walk in diagonals since you walk slightly faster that way.

OP here again. Finally made it past Level 10.

They scared the fuck out of me, not to mention they're mixed together with Ice Giants.

There are no ice giants in Diablo.
Are the lave lords your first fire immunes?

I love these kind of threads. Keep it up, OP. I remember I was utterly terrified when I played Diablo for the first time; the atmosphere is incredibly thick and creepy, and the game is rather unforgiving. Diablo 2 is a step backwards in that regard, even if it's still a great game.

Well I had a blast with Diablo 1. I ended up spamming Guardianall over the place to kill Diablo and all his minions.

Who the fuck in their right mind would stab a crystal into their fucking skull.

I'm sorry but that ending was pants on retarded.

For the color bug, you could just open the "resolution" window by right clicking the desktop (where your wallpaper and icon shortcuts (if any) are). You just leave open that window, and start up the game; you don't even need to run in compatibility mode. Not real sure how it works, but it hasn't failed me yet, and it works for any game with the problem to my knowledge. Just a tip for those of you who don't want to remove basic UI from Windows 7 by killing explorer.exe.

IF you get Hellfire, OP, make sure to find a fan-made patch or something, because Hellfire breaks a LOT of the original game.

It's interesting, very interesting, but not fantastic.
I'd go so far as to make a separate install even.

Personally, I found myself putting some points in STR, DEX and (rarely) VIT, just so that I could use higher level gear that would give me kick-ass boosts.

Basically, the Dreamflange Mace is the best weapon a Sorcerer could find, if you find that shit NEVER GET RID OF IT EVER, and get a nice shield that boosts your Magic and/or mana.

Firebolt is also incredibly good when you play as Sorc, (but shit for everyone else), at higher levels, you can cast them at a very fast rate, they'll be fast as shit, use little mana, and actually do nice damage.

Nope, they'll rape your HP regardless.

Never EVER let these neon-yellow motherfuckers get even an inch within you, never let them get the opportunity to swarm you.

Learn Firewall, or Fireball, or Chainlightning if you're high enough level, demolish those sumbiches before they can even think about moving towards you.

They're slow, but they'll ruin you if you don't watch out.

Well I think it has to do with the crystal alone can't contain diablo's spirit, lore-wise, and needs a host altogether, and with no one else around... well you see where it goes. The hero thinks they can contain him, and then we get diablo 2.

Personally, I think diablo 2's lore might be just dandy, but the gameplay I get bored with by the time the second act rolls around, and I am just sad I have never found more games that are more like the original diablo.

>> No.1021790

>>1019029

The crystal needs a host otherwise Diablo will break free and manifest his true form, and that form isn't the giant red pussy you beat down at the end of the game. It's end-of-world bad.

With no other hosts available, the hero takes it upon themselves to become the new host, hoping they can contain Diablo and not become possessed like the last form they destroyed.

It doesn't work.

The Dreamflange is really damn good, but really depends on how you want to play your mage.

I rock an Arch Angels Staff of Nova. A wizardy suffix would be better, but I just love that level 20 Nova.
