Why was Unreal so based? Why was Epic never able to capture the same magic again?

>> No.10136869

same reason why blizzard couldn't make a good diablo after D2. people/teams change within companies and the good taste probably left with them. increasing corporate greed in the gaming industry probably also to blame.

when did they try to capture the same magic? unreal 2 took a while, and was done by the dudes who did an unreal expansion pack

I think they were too busy making money off of Unreal Tournament.

It is better than the original.
>More viable builds
>Ladder runewords and items in single player
>Can cast spells with hotkeys
>Beautiful graphics, fully 3D
>Unlocked framerate
>Fixed some hitbox bullshit in old version
>Many mods for original are even forward-compatible

You mean, licensing the Unreal Engine? It's crazy to think that 3D Realms licensed UE1 for Duke Nukem Forever. The version that shipped still used the UE1 license, but was basically 3Drealms own branch of UE. It's fascinating to see the version of the UE1 engine that they had with the 2001 builds.

It's literally worse. It's interesting to see the updated graphics, but it's now harder to play the game. PoD and PD2 are the best ways to play Diablo II now.

Image related are a few of the UE games that I have. Just UT99 GOTY Edition, UT2004 DVD release, and the demo disc has Tactical Ops beta 2. I use to play TO a lot.

I was hooked on this game until I got to the temple's second level where you get the multiple rocket launcher thing weapon. Does it get better after? I've been playing Duke Nukem 3D and it's more fun. And I'm on episode 2.

>>10137057
And I thought Ghost Recon's glass destruction was pretty good. Damn that's fantastic glass shattering.

What exactly bothered you about the water temple? The Temple of Vandora comes later and it is my favourite level in the game.

>> No.10137590

>>10137570
I'm not sure. Maybe it's the slow water exploration (most likely) or the story bits that get dropped about the Nali (if they are called that, I can't remember). And that the fighting space feels extremely more limited than before. For me the game is dragging quite a lot, and the atmosphere felt more enigmatic to me.

>> No.10137782

>>10137590
If you can force yourself to make it past this level in the end, I'd say play until you get to the Vandora temple, it's just a few levels away. If you're still not having fun, then it would be safe to drop it. Tho talking about water, you might also hate the slime levels and they're next iirc.

Thanks for the heads up anon.
For me Unreal has been more about exploring an unknown place with occasional shooting more than a "proper" old school FPS experience. I see it as an incredible tech demo. Playing it with EAX definitely adds to it. I just think the focus on water bits are not helping. For me it's as if Riddick would meet Tomb Raider. Two things I enjoy a lot.
I don't get why designers don't usually give the player tools to propel themselves when swimming or let the player move at insane speeds like when on ground. It would expand the gameplay into something more engaging than killing bad fish at a dragging pace.

What a way to make the girls less attractive. I wish they'd let me play with a powerful hot female (aka bad bitch). RIP femme fatale.
