What a weird fucking game. It's like they threw every weird idea they had in one pot. Nothing in this is conventional.
But different doesn't necessarily means good. This game doesn't even compare to the best jrpgs on the snes

Welcome to SaGa, enjoy your stay.

So what's weird about the game, OP?
I've never played a SaGa game before.

Literally everything
Non linear.
No levels. Weapon proficiency levels up the more you use said weapon.
NPCs either unlock a quest or have fuck all to say to you.
Enemies are visible, numerous, and unavoidable if you get swarmed.
Main character changes as the story progresses.
Your character rules over a kingdom. You can spend the kingdom's budget on various shit like creating weapons.
You party members can die a limited amout of times indicated by a stat called Life Points, if their LP reaches zero they're gone for good and you have to replace them with one of the many characters on stand-by in your castle.
I can go on...

What's the best on the SNES? Because I've played Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, Breath of Fire II, and Chrono Trigger and Romancing SaGa is head and shoulders better than those.

It's just wierd cause you've never played a real jRPG until now. Saga games (except rs3, that one is garbage) are true rpg games, mainly because the director is a huge wrpg and tabletop fan. And it really shows, especially with unlimited saga.

I beat it recently, awesome game. I think it's up there with the best, plus there's nothing else like it. Only complaint is that it's easy to get locked out of a few things in awkward ways like Cumberland (I think I left and advanced a generation mid-quest, then couldn't do anything there). I don't care too much about doing everything so that wasn't a huge deal, but kinda sucks since I don't plan on replaying for a while.

If really depends on your tastes, there's a ton of great RPGs.
>Final Fantasies IV through VI
>Chrono Trigger
>Lufia 2
>Mario RPG
>Romancing SaGa 2 and 3
>Live a Live
Those are all favorites of mine, but there's a bunch more. Especially if you also consider action and strategy RPGs.

ive played alot of romancing saga 3 but never played the first or 2nd. I always liked the way the games played (3 at least) and spent alot of time grinding out moves and skills and training with weapons in areas. I should give 2 a try. its translated finally right?

Not the SNES version, and it's likely it'll never be translated.

i would imagine
theres remasters of 2 and 3 on ps5

The only thing that stops me from finishing RS2 is the Battle Rank.

I really like everything about this game except, no grinding. It just gets harder.

Yeah, and it's fucking perfect.
>>10132037
What about it is stopping you? By the time the BR gets high you should be strong enough to handle anything.

There's a reason only Minstrel Song and 3 get talked about when RS comes up.

Romancing SaGa 3 is the weakest among Minstrel Song, 2, and 3. Still an excellent game.

Sounds like an actually interesting JRPG

>> No.10134094

It is interesting. I didn't mean to say it was bad. It's just weird how nothing follows jrpg convention. This game is the exact opposite of "comfort food" for jrpg players.
But there is no doubt i will look back fondly at my experience playing this.

And the occasional SaGa Frontiers

>> No.10134156

>>10131760
Have you ever played Final Fantasy II? The Famicom one, not the other one? The SaGa series is by the same creator and basically a spiritual sequel to that game, with each entry getting more and more unorthodox, finally culminating in whatever the fuck Unlimited SaGa was. Then the series stopped getting regular releases after that.

So you weren't the person who said "This game doesn't even compare to the best jrpgs on the snes"? Anyway yeah this is a good game. It's one of the best JRPGs on the SNES, in fact. The story suffers a bit from the freedom it gives you, but that's a worthwhile tradeoff, especially since JRPG writers of that time were universally very bad at their job to begin with. The freedom is cool. The cosmetics are good, though I think FF4-6, Chrono Trigger, Rudra no Hihou, and Secret of Mana surpass it musically. The difficulty, though low, is not absolutely zero which is a nice change from normal JRPGs. It is good.

You got to play the remake/remaster/whatever it is. That's what I did. Don't worry, it's pretty good. They changed some things but they didn't ruin it.
