>to demonstrate to the students how differently older games and newer games look and feel as part of an exercise, teacher has an NES and Wii in the room
>decide to mess around with the NES one day
>Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt is inside
>play some Mario
>bunch of kids are huddled around me
>one black guy wants to play
>reset the game and select 2-player mode
>start game
>"Where am I? I think you selected the wrong mode"
>I say to him, "I gotta die first, it alternates. It's not like New Super Mario Bros."
>hear the disappointment of not just him, but a few other kids

BTW super mario's version of co-op was very uncommon. And its a fucking terrible experience.

if you wanted to show them co-op you should have brought a beat em up or contra

Well isn't it natural that they would be disappointed if they'd never played 2 player on that game before? I mean lots of NES games like Contra have simultaneous play.

I was disappointed with games that did this even back in the day, when you had games like Chip and Dale and Contra. Alternates is a lame excuse for a game to say it supports two players, I might as well play a single player game and pass over when I die.

As a matter of fact, I can relate a bit:

>Months later he forgets and begins telling me how Mario 64 has aged so well in both physics & graphics.

it's because it makes no sense, no one ever gave a shit about the score so smb game overs meant nothing. the 2-player term is completely misleading, the players experiences the game in the exact same manner had they just switched controllers
