Remakes are big deals in gaming now and they constantly pump them out. Were remakes of games as huge in the past? What were people's reactions to remakes on the SNES, GBA, PS1, etc?

Remember there were a lot less things like you back then.

Looking back, FRLG were pretty bad.

There were barely any remakes of games back then. There were a ton of re-releases, especially of classic arcade games, but full on remakes were very rare. The generational gaps were too drastic to accurately remake a game. If you wanted to make "old game but redone" you'd simply call it a sequel

>pokemon but in COLOR and WIRELESS FOCKIN BATTLING
>Mario 3 but you can SAVE and portable and on a system you actually own instead of going to your friend's house
GBA was a good time to get remakes that added really appealing features, even if some people are too anal about color and sound quality to appreciate it now.

>original: cool rocky landscape beyond the playable areas, sparse vegetation; spread of cities destroys natural areas
>remakes: endless identical trees in a grid
at least they remembered the truck

The gen 2 remakes are more faithful
Pewter city is durrounded by mountains

Which was emphasized further in Gen2 with the destruction of Viridian Forest and most of the major caves, and which the remakes completely messed up by restoring those areas. Yes, they were a means to save on memory, but it made sense that after the three-year timeskip, Kanto only expanded further at nature's expense.

FRLG's tileset and maps are so boring and I really hate how they turned city and route borders into trees.
Pewter City originally made sense as a Rock type gym, it was right next to the mountainous route and the western border was one big mountain. In remakes they turned it into a fucking forest town.

They weren't a very big deal, because consistently good stuff was coming out. Remakes now are the only way for gaming company's to make things that aren't total garbage

Personally, when Mario All-Stars came out, that blew my mind since that was the first remake I had ever seen at that point. And honestly, I loved it. It was great seeing the old games with updated graphics, music, sound effects, etc. Same with Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, since those were the first remakes Pokémon ever got, and likewise, I loved seeing them done on updated hardware, with new graphics, sound, and even gameplay features.

I really like Super Mario All-Stars, apparently Nintendo liked it enough to port them to GBA. Wily Wars is fun too imo even though it gets a lot of crap for various reasons. I guess this is maybe bordering on not /vr/ but I also really enjoyed Mega Man Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X on PSP. I still
need to play Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles as well.

Iirc the biggest complaints were the trumpets and the art style, but I think there was some other stuff they changed too. Would've been cool if they kept Missingno in the game or at least referenced it in some capacity.

There's a Mew under the Truck reference. If you go there and do the secret, you find a Rage Candy Bar.

And also how they were ridiculously strict on not allowing any new Pokemon until post-game. Golbat simply refuses to evolve to Crobat until you have the National Pokedex (locked behind 60 captured Pokemon), and Eevee can't become Espeon or Umbreon at all as there's no in-game clock.

All the GBA remakes/ports felt like a big deal to me because I wasn't old enough for the SNES generation and getting ports felt like a way to experience all those games with he luxury of portability

From reading old mags improved ports or remakes of old games during the early 16 bit era were heavily looked down on even if the 8 bit port was really bad. I think it was an over reaction of how many atari 5200 and 7800 games were improved 2600 games and how badly that put people off. It's why sega changed shadow dancer so much on genesis and how mario allstars was only justified because it had current graphics and 4 games.
Perfect 2D arcade ports were heavily criticized during the ps1 era.

One of the few to get a good reception.

>Slow as fuck Gen4 engine, and that's with the improvements from Platinum; Following Pokemon only tank it further
>Menus are designed specifically for the Touch Screen and are a bitch to navigate
>Graphics carry over the same fake pristineness from FR/LG, even restoring cut Kanto areas to ruin the former "industry progresses further" aesthetic
>Does nothing to fix the key Gen2 problems: the shitty level curve and the poor distribution of Johto Pokemon
>Nob is dropped from localizing in favor of a crappier in-house team who have to overexplain everything
Crystal, for its own issues, remains the best Johto-era game.
