Do you replay games with self imposed challenges /vr/? any favorites?

I play ports of games instead of the original because they provide a different experience. Last time I beat Duke Nukem 3D it was the Sega Saturn version.

minimalist run for OoT
>3 hearts
>no deaths
>no optional items like hylian shield, biggoron sword, nayru's love, extra bottles, capacity upgrades, magic beans, ice arrows, wallets, etc.
>no fairy fountain upgrades other than the first + din's fire
>no epona
adds a ridiculous amount of challenge to the game and forces you to come up with inventive solutions. one of the best things about OoT is that your profile is like a testament of your quest and you can tell what somebody did or didn't do by looking at their items/stats. it makes challenges more fun because you have a testament of your achievement at the end.

Interesting, I've thought about doing something like that but for Wind Waker, maybe it's about time.

I like OoT randomizer bingo because it's a laundry list of chores that eventually does weird goofy results, not because of the actual challenge.

Not really the game has plenty of pots with hearts and most damage does half a heart. If you get down to your last hit you can just save + reset to refill. You can cheese combat with shield stab glitch and deku nuts. Zelda is an easy game.

be honest, did you actually beat it without dying?

>> No.10126223

>>10126197
if you're in a situation where you're guaranteed to die or have already died and you turn off the console to prevent it from being recorded, i'd say that's poor sportsmanship and morally it counts as a loss. then again, the game itself gives you the option of saving, or not saving and returning to the title screen when you get a game over, and deaths are only recorded if you save. i guess it's kind of a grey area. iron knuckles are a total joke by the way, and you can kill them by just lobbing 15 or so bombs/bombchus at them

I actually love the OoT PC port exclusively because of the gameplay options you can tweak. I play with 4X damage and turn off all item drops.

The no item drops is actually a game changer for me and I wish every Zelda game had this option, it actually feels like how the games were originally designed until they get cold feet and add them in. It makes every rupee chest actually have value since theres no other way to get money and you need to scrimp and save for supplies. You actually visit the games stores and make use of the business scrubs both of which are things I have never done once in any Zelda game. I even used Nayrus Love a few times too since it didn't feel broken, the magic meter was limited to only what I had and the 4x damage made the Iron Knuckles insane.

Actively hunting out fairy fountains, buying potions, looking for holes in the ground just to get the rupee chests I never gave a shit about previously, it really made the game feel fresh almost like it was the first time I ever played it. Plus the increased damage kept the game challenging and made me engage with the combat in a way deeper way, I even used items like the Deku Nuts, which again I had never ever done before because the game was already so easy and you only ever take a quarter of a hearts damage from basically everything in the game.

Absolutely recommend trying this out for anyone that likes OoT, I hope someone does something similar for other Zelda games in the future, this would be insane in Twilight Princess.

>> No.10126318

>>10126258
Sounds great. Is there a way to enable only rupee drops or get them at a reduced rate? Not interesting in it being finite

>> No.10126336

>>10126318
There isn't but its really never too bad, you usually get enough for what you need from the chests inside dungeons and you can still cheese rupees other ways like selling bugs but I never do that, it's genuinely satisfying finding your own money

Best one is playing ratchet and clank games without buying armor. Not being able to tank damage makes it more fun because now you have to actually dodge attacks.

Very, very rarely.
I do have self-imposed challenges on my first playthrough though. It usually comes because I like certain things too much.
For example, I'm a huge fan of Danver cars, and Danver Bayonet is Class 4 car in PSP Ridge Racers. So I've had to hack it a bit in order to complete Class 5 and Class 6 races with Class 4 car.
Or, for example, when I love a certain weapon too much, it is way too often a low-grade weapon. But I still won't put it away and complete the whole game with it.

I like to replay GTA III with what I call the street thug ruleset just to spice it up a little. It is nothing fancy, just uses the following rules;

>no buying weapons
>can only use weapons given to the player for missions or found in the game world
>no massacring gangs to get their weapons either
>no collecting hidden packages
>no use of side mission bonuses (so the bribes from vigilante and the like)
extra rules if feeling like it
>no use of pay and spray unless mission directed - only use police bribes in the game world to lose wanted stars
>turn the HUD off

It makes for an experience a bit more in line with the setting of the game while increasing the challenge of a game that wasn't that hard when it was new and certainly isn't after many playthroughs over the last 20 years.

>> No.10129525

It's really rare for me to replay anything in general, I'd rather just keep playing things I've never played before once I beat a game. I don't rewatch TV shows/anime or movies either.

Downgraded ports can be more nostalgic for me than the originals, even if my main experience with the game back in the day were with the original. The originals become timeless, while the ports mattered for just those handful of years when they were the only viable way for people without access to a decent PC or other original hardware to play the game. Like SNES Doom is pretty much garbage compared to just playing the original DOS release, but it still feels like a uniquely 90s way to play Doom. So yeah, it's fun to play inferior ports, just for those weird differences and to experience something which had such a limited period of relevancy.

I've been getting into playing offbeat ports recently too. I never thought about playing anything other than the best versions but now that I have the real consoles with flashcarts and ODEs I was actually enjoying some of these.
Did you know the GBA version of the DKC trilogy is actually great? I'm having fun at least.

Like what do you have to lose playing a weird version of a game, right? In your case you find a twist on a game you already loved and get to experience it in a slightly new way. As a teenager I'd scoff at orange box owners on consoles. "Don't they know they'll never get the gold rush update?" Now it's nice knowing there's a version stuck in time in such a way. I used to call them inferior like >>10129628 points out, but these days I'm happy Saturn Quake has the Dank and Scuz webcomic in it.

>> No.10129751

>>10125973

Generally not, because enforcing rules in a game (like "no damage is allowed in this run" or "only one credit is allowed") is a machine's job and I play video games specifically because I like having machines do all that kind of tedious work in support of my non-tedious fun activity. But if I really love a game then I might stoop to adding one or two rules like that (usually 1CC) in order to squeeze out some more fun.

The more interesting case is a construction game in which you can't help but be especially creative while playing normally - maybe a building game like SimCity, or a physics puzzle game like Pontifex or Armadillo Run, or a game in which you build a highly personalized army of some sort like Yugioh. In that case I'll naturally come up with some cool idea that is probably non-optimal for winning and I'll make it my theme for construction, which effectively produces a challenge run even though that's not the intention behind it.

>> No.10129756

>>10126258

That sounds awesome. Games should generally be published with that kind of mode in them from the start.

>> No.10129760

The first two Paper Marios are good for doing challenge runs. The badge system and amount of control you have over stat upgrades allow for a lot of customization. BP only runs for example you actually need to resource manage. The small numbers for health/damage in battles also makes everything very easy to calculate, it's never vague like it is in rpgs where attacks do varying amounts of hundreds of damage.

The games are also anti-grind in that weaker enemies grant less exp the higher level you are, eventually giving zero. So you cant just grind out the problem. Battles feel like puzzles and it's rewarding to complete them.

Sometimes you get real crazy deviations too like Chamber of Secrets. PC, PS1, PS2, Xbox/GC, GBC, and GBA are all completely different games despite being called the same thing and advertised as the same product.

Games with freedom to save and reload basically anywhere almost all have gotten a self-imposed challenge from me. Iron man is too cumbersome, so I end up doing something like

>I have to have a rock in my inventory to reload after a death/outcome I don't like. After I reload, I toss the rock. There are a limited # of rocks in the entire game.

I also like challenges like >>10126258 or self-imposed "styles"
