Axl was such a bizarre addition. For any complaints that people had about the later entries in the X series, I don't think anybody ever complained about the only two playable characters being X and Zero.

Axl was an attempt to introduce a new gameplay mechanic into the series, the ability to transform into other forms.

Problem is the gameplay was never really made to suit that sort of thing, let alone take advantage of it.

Looking back, Axl seems to be a "new generation" type character (which X8 builds upon with the new-gen reploids and themes of evolution). Of course, there's a bunch of problems:
>Axl, despite being Red Alert's secret weapon, acts like a rookie which gives him a 'kid tag-along' feel
> As mentioned, his copy ability (at least, in the way the game utilized it) was lame.
>While his amnesia is mentioned in story, the fact that he already had preconceived notions regarding maverick (hate em) and X (looks up to) that he doesn't remember why is only evident in soundtrack booklet
>There's little reason to use him once you unlock X
>The fact that you have to unlock X in and of itself. On a related note, X's pacifism being cranked up to character assassination levels to make him unreasonable.

X8 and Command Mission both make improvements: X8 reworks him into more of a "Bass function" by giving him the multidirectional shot and gives him guns with low damage but infinite ammo (giving him a different niche from X and Zero) while scaling back his copy ability and overall writing him as less of a rookie while Command Mission, being a turn-based RPG, makes his copy ability useful. Both also give him a more 'balanced' role in the plot compared to X7 where the conflict was essentially a custody battle.

I like Schala. I was disappointed when I realized she wasn't going to be joining the party, I felt like they were really setting her up for that.
I guess having two ponytailed princesses who cast magic on one team was maybe a bit too much overlap but I wouldn't have minded.
