I noticed a unhealthy lack of shmup discussion in /vr/ so let's have a shmup thread.

Post your tate setups, highscores, game recommendations, latest pickups and let's have a general discussion about shmups.

I've been trying to 1-ALL Dodonpachi and Battle Bakraid normal course, still sucking tho, can't get through 1-5 in ddp and the cloud stage rapes me every time in Bakraid, but I'm getting there. The only 1cc's ive gotten so far are Deathsmiles and Psyvariar.

Also ordered Ketsui since it got the region free release on PS3.

I basically play only cave games. Playing them just feels good.
I'm not a score maniac but I like to evade things. So usually I turn difficulty to the max.
Playing on Dell p1130 but I don't have strength and patience to flip the screen when want to play Deathsmiles or any other 4:3 game

I only 1cc Deathsmiles and Daifukkatsu so far.
Dai-Ou-Jou is too much for me. Can't get through level 3 also can't play Ibara because I don't see the fucking bullets.

1012251

If you haven't heard of it yet, I'd fully recommend Einhander for PS1.
Not quite your typical shmup. The game has a strong emphasis on the weapons you can pick up, choosing the ones you want wisely, and utilizing those for the small amount of time you have them for (they all have limited ammo and if you don't get more of it it won't last you as long as you'd like it to)

I really appreciate the ship selection. It really underlines the core gameplay

>> No.1012291

Striker 1945 is my favorite right now. Check it out on mame. Also check out captain skyhawk on NES. Its a great game and has a pseudo 3D aspect where you can fly high or low to hit enemies on the too down screen. It also has a top gun style segment between levels.

Also check out raptor by apogee for early PC. Another great game and you can but weapon upgraded between levels.

>> No.1012301

>>1012267
It certainly does, although I find myself picking the ship with three gun slots which switch more than any other.
The ship with two gun slots feels like a waste because they both shoot at the same time, and the ship with one gun slot and two machine guns just isn't enough for me.

The weapons I look out the most for are the Vulcan, Cannon, and the Blade or Riot.

Salamander Deluxe Pack or Sexy Parodius would be another, for ultimate Konami action.

Cheaper games might be Sonic Wings Special (very approachable game), and Thunder Force V (though it has a far cheaper PS1 US port that's more or less as good as the Saturn version).

It's harder for score players, but much easier for survival players. The patterns are toned down by a lot, and the hyper fills much quicker.

Supposedly, some Mexican has Blue Label. Who the hell knows though, from what I've heard Mexicans only care about DonPachi, so he's probably just talking out his ass.

Still find it really funny that Japan and Mexico have underground cults for DP and regularly battle each other, very secretive when it comes to their techniques. All you'll see from these guys is the end-game scoreboard, not even any hope seeing them play in an arcade because they just kill themselves when you watch. While DDP has a few secretive players, they're very rare.

>1: Get ten bee tokens on a single life in at least three levels

GIII is a well-designed game. It's often tough AND unfair, but the game does give you the tools to succeed if you're willing to persevere. Could have something to do with arcade Ketsui not running at exactly 60 Hz while the port does. The arcade version is running at 59.something Hz so there's something between 59 and 60 frames per second. The console port speeds this up to an even 60 Hz so it feels ever so slightly smoother.

I think I read it in some version comparison on Cave-STG back when it was still around.

Just beat Fantasy Zone II. I guess it was essentially the same game as the first, but I rather liked the first game more for some reason. The downgrade in graphical quality probably didn't help either; though the art direction was still fun as ever.

Also, seriously wtf ending.
* Who was the mastermind leading the enemy forces that so closely resembled Opa-Opa and fought with the same functional weapon? <cute pic of Opa-Opa
with a thought bubble with a big fat ? in it>
* It was in reality, Opa-Opa's other self.
* Due to the emotional stress brought about as a result of a war during his
childhood, he developed a dual personality of virtue and vice, unknown even to
himself. <pic of Opa-Opa with a sweatdrop with a smiley on one side and an evil
grin on the other>
* Only his father was aware of this fact.
* Splitting into 2 seperate beings, he became in addition to his role as the
hero, the enemy's mastermind, thus because of the paternal bond existing
between them, his father had no alternative but to assume the role of their
leader. <pic of Opa-Opa (or his father) with a tear in his "eye">
* Now, as a result of Opa-Opa's courageous victory, the evil being that dwelled
within him has been destroyed. Deeply moved, Opa-Opa can no longer contain his
tears, which as they fall, signify his return to the sole path of
righteousness. <big Opa-Opa & little Opa-Opa before a sunset *weep*>
* Opa-Opa vows that never again will war occur.
* THE END

Well, if that helps you, I cannot say if the first Fantasy Zone ending was either hilarious or sad. It may be because the last boss is a multicoloured egg-shaped giant ship that cries of happiness when his son, a smaller egg-shaped ship with wings, defeats him.

Yup. Though I just play them on a rotated CRT television with the cables that come with the consoles.

The 360 ports also allow you to freely resize the game window to fit your screen. Unfortunately they will always result in some uneven scaling of the output (you can hide this with a slight blur filter, but the blur filter is another problem itself), while the Daioujou and Espgaluda ports on PS2 give you a default, good-looking resolution for CRT.

Very mysterious, you have to wonder if WTN just kills himself because he's self hating like many of the other top players, or if he actually wants to hide his strategy. I know top level players drop a perfectly good run and just start over, even if the mistake is really minor. Hey guys, I know that PLOT is not exactly necessary for a shmup, but I recently got a Japanese friend of mine to translate Raiden Fighters' storyline. What it says might surprise you...

"In AD90 unknown space invaders intent on colonizing the earth were repalled by the newest "Raiden" fighters. According to captured enemy troops, their planet had become too polluted through five civil wars and sought colonize the green earth. They called the 'Raiden' 'nightmares'. Raiden meant the return of high performance fighter groups used by the rebels in one of their world wars. This is the story about the rebel fighter groups."

And if I'm not mistaken, getting the RF1/2 medals in RFJ is accomplished by getting a maximum medal chain and destroying the miclus at the end, right? If you're looking for more traditional shooters just go for the classics like Gradius, Thunder Force and R-type, also check out Gun Nac, Musha and Blazing Lazers.

Could someone explain to me the draw of older-style STGs? There are so many and everyone says they're good, but I just find them boring and not challenging. Even the difficult parts are boring because most of the time it's just very fast bullets or some sort of unique attack, and in either case you really don't see it coming if you're doing a blind run.

Move more. You already know there will be fast bullets in older shoot 'em up's and you know they will kill you if you aren't moving when the enemy comes on screen to fire them.

So the solution is to keep moving up and down (or left to right if it is a vertical game).

Honestly more fun than a screen cluttered with a ton of slow bullets, or at least different bullets with different velocities.

I struggled all the time with the 1-2 boss, but I just practiced other things and then eventually it clicked once I started to practice 1-2 again. The pattern he shoots out depends on what phase he's in when you bring him down to low health. I'm pretty sure you can manipulate this by stalling him out if you want a certain pattern. I haven't tried it because I just kill him as quickly as possible when I play a run.

He has end two patterns, the needle bullet pattern and the fast burst. Personally, I feel less stressed dodging the fast burst because microtapping on the PS3 d-pad is really scary and sometimes feels inconsistent.

I personally don't view it as something that I have to beat, and especially something I have to beat by a certain time. I view it as an intense action game that will usually put me into the fray quickly and that I can easily find plenty of enjoyment in playing it for ten, twenty, or sixty minutes.

I'm a garbage player, but I could probably stop bombing there if I practiced a little bit more. There's actually a trick with the 1-4 boss to make him freeze up or dance, but I'm not sure how to trigger it. 1-5 is also harder than 1-6 in my opinion, because of the middle section.

I haven't played SDOJ yet, but...

Auto Hyper - No idea, I think you hyper when you get hit?
Auto Shield - Pretty sure this means auto bomb, not sure.
Reduce Fighter - I think this means you have a smaller hitbox. Could be wrong!
Reduce enemy bullet - Obvious
Automatic Acquisition Item - get all the items like it's 2hu
Marked Bee - I think it means you don't need to laser the bees to get it?
Invisible Operator - dunno
Auto Pilot - Ship moves by itself, manual fire/bomb/hyper
Full Autopilot - Same as autopilot, but it shoots and stuff.
AI Partner - An Artificial Girl for the lonely shmup player. ;_; Fucks up your streams and ram bullets just like a real person!
Maximum does not stop - You never lose MAX bonus I'm guessing.
Invisible fighter collision disp - Sounds to me like it means no hitbox display.

I know nobody thinks much of this ingame shop, because pros and score whores demand them to be off, but turning on a 2P AI sounds like a really fucking cool feature that needs to be staple in all multiplayer shmups. I'm a lonely person who doesn't like to go online for these kinda games.

On the main menu, under Arcade HD, there is something called challenge.

From shumps forum:

1-5: beat the midbosses in each stage. you get 1 life, no bombs and lv6 hyper.
6-10: beat the stages (not bosses) without breaking your combo chain.
11-15: collect all the bees in the stages.
16-20: Perfect combos for stages 1-5
21-25: beat the bosses of each stage. first 3 bosses you get 1 life, lv1 hyper and bombs. on the other 2 you get 2 lives and lv2 hyper. you can use autobomb.
26-30: simply clear the stages. you start with 3 lives.
31-34: i think you have to use the midbosses on stages 1, 2, 4 and 5 to recharge your hyper gauge. you use the first part of the stage to build up the gauge.
35: "Aim for a MAX destruction combo meter from the large enemy aircrafts" (?)
36: hyper gauge charge.. charge it before the s1 midboss appears?
37: charge the hyper gauge during the stage 1 boss.. by destroying the parts on it's sides?
38: 4th midboss 1up get. self-explanatory.
39: beat the 4 midbosses on stage 5.. in the video they do recharge the hyper on the 2nd and 4th midboss.
40: hyper stock.. in the video i think they collected a bee during the s5 midboss while hyper was activated to get lv1 hyper.
41-45: beat the midbosses on expert mode. like 1-5 you get 1 life, no bombs and lv6 hyper.
46-50: beat the bosses on expert mode. on first 2 bosses you get 1 life, 3 and 4 you get 2 lives, and the last one gives you 3 lives. lv1 hyper and autobomb can be used.

If the former, start on Image Fight (make sure to not go to any penalty zones), then work your way up to Toaplan stuff, then you can begin on the good shit, like Cave and Raizing and Psikyo shmups.

If the latter, go with Thunder Force III or IV, then a Darius (like Gaiden), then finally you can start looping through the Gradiuses, Rtypes, and maybe Border Down.

Get a pad tailored for 2D, such as SNES or Saturn. Those are real good.

Memo harder. Watch replays. Never get discouraged and quit playing for long periods of time (i.e. weeks on end). If you still fuck up on the first few stages of a shmup, it might be time to try something else and then return back to that shmup. Some shmups just don't click with certain people.

I've been considering grabbing a cheap PS2 converter. I really liked the d-pad on my PS3 controller up until it wore out. Really want a new stick, but if I gotta deal with a pad, I'd probably go with the Saturn pad or the dualshock.

I'm playing DoDonPachi, settled on the 360 pad for now since my keyboard will just suddenly stop reading inputs. Tapping is pretty hard using an analog stick, kinda sucks. I was playing Raiden Fighters Jet for a week or so, but I decided to play DDP instead since it's largely considered to be the STG to learn how to play STGs. RFJ was kicking my ass pretty hard too, but I didn't really watch any replays. I just played, figured out how to trigger the RF1 and 2 medals and kinda stopped playing it. RFJ feels really good to play, but I don't think I'm good enough to play it without a stick.

Personally, I hate the Dualshock d-pads, but that's just me. The dissected four buttons style just doesn't agree with me or my thumb as it starts to feel like crap after a bit. And even for 3D with the analog sticks, the controller is lame because of where each stick is located. Sony really doesn't know how to design good hardware.

DDP is easy, at least maybe until stage 4 and beyond. I don't see why you should be having any problems. Also never use analog sticks for shmups, it's going to be much slower than digital input.

They tear my thumbs to shreds, but I get used to it after a week or so of playing with them. I should just order some parts for the stick, but I'm not entirely sure how much that would cost me. And sadly, the 360 pad is all I've got for now. The d-pad is so bad on that first model 360 pad, so so bad. Turns out the keyboard is pretty good though, despite that it's from 1998. Tough as hell playing KB though, not sure how people do it.

DDP is pretty easy if you play C-S and do straight survival, but pulling off ballsy scoring techniques is pretty nerve wrecking and really hard to do. Then again, some guy on IRC who consistently makes it to 2-5 calls himself a shitty player constantly, so maybe it is really easy. In any case, chaining is what makes it hard for me, dropping the chains and resetting every time I play.
