I recently got a blue Gameboy Pocket and it's great. The screen size and clarity is much higher than I expected, especially in comparison to the DMG screen. It's noticeably bigger than the Gameboy Color screen too. Definitely my preferred way for playing original Gameboy games from now on.

I was thinking about getting 3DS variant, but they're quite expensive (and not retro). Was thinking i might pick up a GBC instead somewhere down the line and get a flash cart, both of which seem relatively cheap.

I'm not expecting until shipping starts. Retro Dodo got a flop sent to him early, but it still wasn't until 1 day after shipping started that he actually received it. Also DESU I'm kinda worried about the fact we haven't seen a real unit yet. I wanna say at this point relative to projected ship start date, the flop already had several pictures of a real, physical device out there. The flop also missed it's target shipping start date by 6 days, too, so I hope the combination of these two things doesn't bode poorly for the target RP2S shipping start date.

I hate to keep shilling the RK2023....HOWEVER:
The games only started working properly once I upgraded to ArkOS. Saturn, PS1, DC, and PSP can make the device run hot in more graphically intensive games and especially if you've upped the resolution of said systems, the battery is right next to the chips (one of which can get hot on its own independently from the battery when running "higher end" games) so leaving it hot for too long could potentially ruin the system, and for all I know not all Saturn games will work or at least not without adjusting some settings.

Is it too much to ask for a simple handheld that has a PSP form factor, symmetrical button layout, mini HDMI port on top, inset power button and volume control keys on top, stacked trigger keys, 5.0 inch OLED screen, packed in SD cards that are name brand quality, battery that lasts 8 hours and never gets too hot, ROMs from Odyssey to PS5 playable flawlessly even with shaders and without having to mess around in config, every single game in existence preloaded onto it in CHD format, and a slot in the back to precariously place a Game Boy game cartridge that will be knocked out with a light breeze?

>> No.10121517

All joking aside, a famiclone is a brick with pre-installed 8-bit games while anything with an SD card is going to be a retro emulation handheld.
The only device that does both is the Retromini, which is mostly only good for GB/GBC/GBA games and is very subpar for SNES and Genesis titles. But it's small, $30, and has both the famiclone menu and sd-card slot for roms.

The RG seems like a really good price, even though the Miyo isn't bad either.
I probably only want to play up to PS1 anyway, so I don't really need/want analog sticks.
On a semi-related note, I still have my old GP2X Wiz, that was a great little handheld when I had a long train journey back in 2005/6. Played through Shining Force for the first time on it, and the touch-screen and stylus was so cool for playing stuff like Monkey Island.

The one assembly line job I had for the local newspaper where we had to bundle coupons, fliers, advertisements, etc in with the local newspaper's print, but I was also the go-to tech guy for whenever anything went wrong. I assembled an entire production line together in a day by myself after the warehouse had a deep cleaning and nobody knew how to fucking even put a power cable back into a PC's power supply and did the whole hand-waving, "not me" shit.
If these chinks can't even fucking properly screw together a hundred handhelds in a week after I my lazy retarded ass re-assmebled an entire company's production line in one day, it just makes me fear how bad the quality is for their shit product.

Powkiddy is the Chip’s Ahoy to Anbernic’s Oreos. Their handhelds feel like cheap garbage, but they’re also priced like cheap garbage, and they’re honestly at the top of the trash pile in terms of performance, above Data Frog and all the nameless $5 Famiclone makers. Basically: you get what you pay for. The V90 just barely hits the mark for enjoyable GBA performance, so it’s unquestionably a better entry system than the SF2000, even if it’s twice the price. They should do more clamshell stuff, since it seems like they’re the only ones at that price range willing to tackle that form factor.

Rumors seem abound like PC Gamer speculating in early June that Navi 3.5 iGPUs could be on par with a RTX 3070/RX 6700XT, but that's only for the "mega APU" referred to as Strix Halo. That seems like a very generous assumption though, and there's another article by Tom's Hardware saying that there's speculation that Strix Point (mobile processors) could go as high as 12 cores. These are still rumors and this processor is rumored to be out in the second half of 2024, but if they ever end up being true then I'm going to use the opportunity to snatch up any second hand 6000 or 7000 series handhelds that ever go for cheap.

As much as I hate the slight muffled quality of rear facing speakers, it's something I can forgive with headphones. What I can not understand is why the SF2000 has both rear facing speakers and no audio jack. Just, what the heck were they thinking? Were all the play-testers deaf, or did they just not test at all?

bruh! Ya know! Or just use their old phone or something, jesus, anything with 3-12gb of ram and a snapdragon 450 at minimum is gonna wipe the fucking floor with every handheld on display here save for one or two exceptions. (ill show a little respect to retroid and the odin, with the idea that mini pcs dont really count) but even then, an old phone can be more than just a handheld, razer kishi and the backbone have made it an awesome experience now with a direct usb connection so no lag input. I gave in, bros. I have an MM+ for SNES games, but I really did want an SP-style GBA clone. I know about the Miyoo Mini Flip, but even assuming comes out, seeing as its not called the “Miyoo Mini+ Flip”, it’s probably gonna use the original nano form factor and be some FunkeyS unergonomic e-waste. Well what is the future of these retro handhelds? It feels like we have basically reached the endgame with machines that are able to emulate GameCube and PS2, we have both smaller devices for 8-64 bit games and larger ones for more demanding games. It feels like there is almost nowhere to go so all we're gonna get is incremental upgrades or various sidegrades like the Retroid Pocket iterations.

The only real problem seems to be battery life which is extremely short on powerful devices and even weaker ones have worse battery than an average phone.

Now that is the massive cope argument.
I have both a steam deck and a small chink one, and I prefer the chink one due to its small size when doing 8/16 bit stuff, especially when outdoors.

What's the best chinkshit "brick game" from the perspective of someone who actually wants to use it to play tetris, and not just as a nostalgic novelty to stick on the shelf. Two rotate buttons is a must.

We know what the future is hardware-wise, it's basically inside smartphones and will trickle down eventually to phones 7-8 years afterwards which is where we are at. The main issue is whether or not there's enough money into breaking out the devices into a separate category for Chinese manufacturers to put money into getting better. Most of the issues and quality control lapses are from most of these handhelds using third rate parts and off the shelf components from various devices and Android TV boxes which is how the category got started. If there isn't enough money for it to break out in a major way, then the category will never really improve and just chase power like smartphones did when it doesn't need to be that way. Handheld PCs isn't the same market just FYI even if there is overlap so it isn't clear stuff like the Steam Deck is going to change things in this regard.

PSPgo's seem to be a bit overpriced on ebay, probably because they're seen more as collector's items now. I'd say go with a Vita because even the 2000s with the LCD screens have better screens than the PSP, and the Vita can nearly perfectly emulate PSP and PSX games as well as play Vita games. That being said, sniping PSP's for a low cost on ebay (potentially for half the price of a typical Vita 2000) is quite easy and Vitas have jumped in price because of jewtubers.
TL;DR: If you have the money, get a vita, if you don't, get a psp.

>is the pspgo worth it?
Nope.
It occupies the same space as the GB micro (both of which I got memed into buying): a cute novelty that is not only less functional, but is also more cumbersome to actually use.
The vast majority of people I've come across who praise them either bought them for aesthetics and don't actually use them, or have manlytears hands. And God forbid you have to repair it in any way, because it simply ain't happening.

Since you already own the best model of the PSP, there's no reason to buy a Go unless you're looking to fill out your r/retro shelf. In which case, get out.

To be honest anon, I think I understand your apprehension. Because it seems I got lucky with the d-pad compared to many (I've seen at least one anon on here say they do get some false diagonals), it's unfortunately probably safer for me to say it may be better to look elsewhere. On the RP3+ I had the opposite problem, where it was perhaps overly difficult to hit diagonals (especially in fighting games, for me personally), but it was a great d-pad otherwise and certainly one you won't have to worry about false diagonals.

Anyways, I know what I just said about luck kind of invalidates the meaningfulness of what I play, but for thoroughness I'll answer. I've played a lot of shmups, platformers, and jarpigs on my X28. One of the first things I tried was fighters to test how easy it was to hit diagonals, and in that regard I thought it was fantastic. Still, that ease of hitting diagonals may be an issue for you, and in that sense I figure an RP3+ will probably be the safest option for you. A successor to the RP3+ is also likely going to come out at the end of this year, or early next year

New 3DS will have better performance with add-on chip SNES games, and can run PS1 games on a similar level to low end chinkhelds. Old 3ds can't. That's it. 1st to 4th gen (except for SNES) is pretty much the same on both, maybe more framedrops for GEN/TG16. For GBA you should use the hardware BC instead of emulation. Also don't bother with retroarch on old 3DS, the cores are all optimized for New 3DS. Use standalone emulators instead.

>Plays DreamCast, PSP, and N64 games

Most ARM boards don't have working sleep on mainline Linux, what really happens is that your handheld fakes sleep by turning off the display and aggressively parking CPU cores. But the SoC still consumes a lot more energy than it would in a real sleep state, you can still feel the heat coming from it (at least I can with my RG353PS). I mostly just turn it off when I don't use it, it's not like it takes long to boot.

>> No.10131047

>>10131016
Yeah, I only use the "sleep" on these Linux handhelds for quick moments where I need to sit it down for a moment. Like if I were playing at an airport and it was time to board, I might put it into sleep. Though at this point, I think I would just shut it down and pick up with the auto-save state once I was settled in.

Do you mean as an adult or as a child? As a child, carrying my Geam Gear with me to school made me the coolest kid on the school bus, because I also owned the Game Gear TV Tuner, so we would watch Ronin Warriors in the morning and The Simpsons on the way way home. It was also nice being able to play sonic games during lunch and recess. While the Game Gear was large, it was still manageable.
As an adult, I bought a working replacement Game Gear for the nostalgia, as being the cool kid for an hour a day as a small child was the peak of my life and a height I'll never achieve again.

When I was a child, I bought a large fanny pack, big enough for a game gear. I then bought 2 of this weirdly made fanny pack where the pack slipped on and off of the belt (as in, it was a proper belt). I then put those 2 detachable fanny packs onto my over sized fanny pack, and walked around wearing three, so I had enough room for my game gear, my rechargeable battery, and my collection of games and extra stuff.
Words can not express the amount of cringe I have for my past self.

Reviews are demonstrating how ass the dpad is on the X28. That alone may sway me to Pocket 3+ instead. Any insight on dpad from personal use?

>> No.10131407

>>10131330
That's dependent on overall use-case I'd say. Personally, my plan is a PC for large and newer games + games I'd mod, Deck for small to mid sized PC games that I don't plan to mod + some higher-end emulation, X28 for PSP and earlier emulation, and a phone I don't use anymore for DS emulation specifically.
GammaOS for X28 plans to fix the analog stick snapping issues and better optimize the chip. Plus it's ergonomics and slightly larger screen with better resolution, personally, would put it above the RP3+.
>>10131386
The only review I recall having d-pad issues was RGC, whilst others heard about his issues and couldn't replicate them, saying it was likely a bum d-pad. I've more often heard of screens being both too bright or not bright enough however.

X28
>the most sensible button layout of the 3
>nice big 5.5" inch screen
>amazing speakers
>grips on the back make it comfy to hold
>biggest negatives: iffy d-pad and sticks; d-pad sometimes registers false diagonals though still plenty usable, sticks aren't calibrated well and stick to the cardinal directions too much

405M
>most pocketable of the 3
>nicely sized 4 inch 4:3 screen that no other device has so far
>GammaOS fixes a lot of problems of the stockOS and also gives it the best battery life of the 3 on power saving mode
>biggest negatives: d-pad on the bottom, inline shoulders, metal

RP3+
>inbetween the other two in terms of size, may be considered pocketable depending on who you ask and what their pants size is
>custom drivers bring out the highest performance among the 3 (though 405M matches it with GammaOS now)
>overall nice Android software experience, Retroid does a lot of OTA updates to keep things running smoothly more than any other company
>very nice high resolution screen
>biggest negatives: start/select/volume/home buttons all in terrible places, the sticks feel the worst out of the 3 imo not in terms of calibration but just how cheap and loose they feel might be the caps they used

Personally I like the X28 the best but if pocketability is important, I'd go with a 405M or an RP2S

At large android has held the seat for the longest time.

And shit like this: https://www.vox.com/recode/2021/8/10/22617196/apple-ios15-photo-messages-scanned

They can say its for "safety" but let's be real. Apppe wants your data. Google isn't any better. You're speaking to someone who is into the idea of foss and control of their tech. Even if IOS becomes the number one used phone. I never will. Again enjoy being owned by your tech, I and plenty of others will continue the pursuit of freedom when it comes to the digital. This isn't a stance that I'd lord over anyone. It's my personal stance and your desperate little attempt to one upe over something so fucking stupid is mind boggling. Touch grass kid. I'll stick to my android for personal use and as a handheld which was the origin point of this convo.
