it was one of the first (the first?) good games, and being something new everybody wanted to give it a try. being cheap helped, you didnt have to buy the whole cabinet.

Something that is rarely talked about is how games play into national primal instincts. Pac-Man got so big in America because it touched 2 subconscious desires of every American:
1) eat as much as possible;
2) run away from your problems—debt, ghosts of the past, aging, etc.
It is a final point of an American dream—become a 300lb fatty while being several millions in debt.
This is the reason why yuro platformers all had these empty fields with lots of pointless coins in them. Historically, yuros depended on wheat and rye crops; the more they collected, the happier they felt. Collecting endless amounts of small golden things touches subconscious desires of yuros, making them feel accomplished and safe; it sends a signal to their brain that they have enough fat for the winter.
Now you know why Bomberman is so beloved in the Middle East.

Its not average and was an excellent game in its era. You were obviously not even born then so who asked for your worthless opinion?

No one cares what you think as long as you stay in the middle east on your containment barren wasteland away from civilisation. Always remember, video games and computers and digital computing and arcade games and the internet were invented by western nations. You're just worshiping the US and EU mentally every time you touch a computer or games console. This makes you spite post against your civilizational superiors even funnier.

Like Donkey Kong, it was really big at the time and has had near constant sequels.
Unlike Donkey Kong, the only better sequel came out when the original was still popular.

it is a testament, to the fleeting nature of our existence;
pacman mad namco BILLIONS (with a "B")
in 1980s money,
it was the number one selling arcade cabinet in the history of the world (still is)

it goes to show, that in this life -
it doesn't matter how successful you are
it all becomes forgotten, ash to ash, dust to dust
there is nothing new under the sun

it has been less than 50 years
its now "rare to find" a working pacman pcb
you almost never see the once ubiquitous cabinets in the wild

i worked for elementary schools for nearly a decade;
when asking the kids "whos this"
they can recognize mario, yoshi, mickey, even sonic
show them pacman and they have no idea what it is

when the oldfags die
pacman will die along with it
pacman represents the transitory nature of human existence

impermanence

Sure a lot of what you said might be accurate, but I do disagree with this. PacMan PCBs are fairly reliable and pretty easily reparable when they do fail.

plenty of games at that time were better and I really doubt you or anyone on vr is old enough to remember 1980 and besides can no one judge the quality of books from the 1800s or earlier since everyone who was around when they first released is dead?

Ms. Pac-Man was my mom's favorite game, she didn't care to play anything else besides Tempest when she hung out in arcades as a kid/teen, but it was mostly just Ms. Pac-Man she played. My first console was a Genesis and she bought Ms. Pac-Man with it, and it was only that and the first Sonic that she played... but she barely played Sonic, only did it when I begged her to. She never played any other game.

I figure the initial attraction to it was because it's a girly themed game with romantic cutscenes (believe it or not they were cool at the time despite being very simple) and chasing the high score was addictive. It appealed to a girl like her who was stuck hanging out at the arcade with the boys despite not having an interest in gaming, probably the '80s equivalent of women who play a lot of candy crush today without ever touching a console besides maybe to boot up Netflix on their boyfriend's.

Her continued interest in it as an adult is probably just pure nostalgia, but I'm 36 and haven't seen her play it since I was probably like 6 lol.
