The fact that she has a hover ability certainly makes it hard to say that's she's "objectively" the worst. Sure if you're looking at the game 30 years after the fact through the eyes of a person whose goal is to clear a memorized game in the shortest time possible then maybe she's the worst one to use, but that's such a limited point of view. Imagine you're a kid playing the game and don't know every single shortcut, warp location, and every enemy pattern and location to the point that you're just executing a routine, then you can understand why having a hover ability which can make it easier/more forgiving to line up your jumps, clear certain gaps, avoid certain attacks, and generally just feel fun to control can be a benefit.

We were 4 kids who played this game together back in the day and one time we decided that from then on each would "own" one character to play the game with when we were together.
First guy to choose immediately selected the princess, I was second and chose Luigi, 3rd Mario and 4th Toad.
All predictable picks because the most difficult challenge by far is the platforming not going fast. The best character is objectively the one you can most consistently play with and win and I bet even speedrunners if they were competing for consistency instead of speed would unanimously select the princess.
We still see each other and our children play together decades later. I don't know why they made that rule. I remember also a rule that only the first to get to Top Secret Area in Super Mario World could use it and the others had to farm items elsewhere.
