in my opinion, a Genesis/MD model 1 (HD graphics) with a model 2 sega cd with the expansion plate.

best out of the box sound and graphics with the genesis/MD with best reliability of the CD

This is the only answer. It's not the most aesthetic combination but it's the most functional. The sound issues of the Genesis 2 are a tad overblown so that's more up in the air, but there is absolutely no reason at all to use a Sega CD 1. They're expensive and finicky and don't have any advantages over the SCD2.

Left for better audio. Just be sure to rout the headphones back in the front of the genesis into the back of the Sega CD with a 3.5mm ("AUX cord) audio cable, and then the RCAs in the back of the Sega CD into your sound system/TV. Otherwise it's not mixing properly.

the issue was that people couldn't buy it at the start for over a year thanks to a silicon shortage causing manufacturers to produce cartridges from existing consoles than new consoles, this caused that people who wanted one to never get it, this caused a reduced number of consoles made at the time for an enough time for the megadrive to not have sufficient games aside from the launch ones and to not have a foothold, reducing the interest of it by other competition which was more well known and had a real first impression to the public.
and mario bros 3. the mega drive was released at the exact same day as well.

>what the fuck was Sega doing in Japan?
Being the biggest arcade publisher ever. People get it twisted and think that Sega was a console manufacturer with a constant losing streak when in reality they were an arcade company that dabbled in the home market for a spell and got spectacularly lucky exactly once with the Genesis in the west when the stars aligned in their favor. It's not that they weren't trying exactly, it's that they never understood the console market and 90% of their performance reflects that.

You know, this is actually an interesting point and a really a tough break for Sega in that regard. Being at the top of the arcade game in the 80’s may have seemed like a safe bet, while consoles seemed like chump change. But man, look at how things turned out. I do wonder how Nintendo managed to make the leap from playing cards to owning the mere idea of the home console in just a few short years. I bet that if Sega had the prescience or luck, they would have been able to do an even better job.

Nintendo was (and arguably still considers itself to be) a toy company. Getting toys in kids' homes was always it's core business. It doesn't really matter whether that toy plugs into a TV or not. When video games first started out they were being made by computer programmers and electrical engineers. Guys with a background in television and electronics. That's why those early consoles like the Intellivision had controllers that looked like phone pads. They operated based on what they knew. "Here's plenty of buttons. Use them however your specific game needs them and print what each one does on a little paper card players can slide over the buttons." Meanwhile at Nintendo they were a bunch of toy makers by trade so they approached it as if the object itself was what was going to be played with and therefore needed to be intuitive. "This is the d-pad, it moves things on screen. This is the start button. These are the two action buttons. That's what they're there for and all games should use them that way."

Sega's arcade division meanwhile lived on the cutting edge. Every game they put out had some hyper expensive technology inside of it. The Genesis was an attempt to finally make those games playable at home since up until then it was plain impossible. I guess the point I'm making is that the vocational background of each company played a huge role in how they approached video games as a concept.

Yea I think your postage may cost more than the console itself. You can buy a complete console w controller w sonic 2 CiB here for around 80. The only way around this is if you find a seller who does massive amounts of transactions. I have a Japanese friend who just started his business and he’s shipped me a couple of games for like 4 dollars and sent free shipping on an item I paid 80 for. Maybe I just got lucky w that relationship I can ask how he does it. He did ship me a few games for Pennie’s too that aren’t worth anything to anyone but me really.
