Nintendo has always been the soulless husk who tries to be as evil as possible until people tell them to eat a dick. They hit on some great IPs early and are essentially immune to failure but they get their shit checked occasionally like third party devs leaving en masse during the 64 era. They’re more lucky than they are talented, and rare showcased this before the stampers dipped.

Rare was always able to work around Nintendo's built in limitations, they even reverse engineered the famicon which disproved Nintendo's claims that it couldn't be done. They promptly hired them after and gave them preferential treatment and permission to use their IP's up until the Starfox Adventures debacle and purchase by Microsoft (I'll come back to that later)
Rare knew their value which is why they overpriced that last 1-2% and prevented Nintendo from purchasing them entirely. They had slowly built themselves up into a giant potential competitor, complete with IP's that could compete with Nintendo's and with the mindset to go past the "kiddie" stage with titles like Perfect Dark and Conker. They were basically one of the only devs other than Nintendo 1st party that were utilizing 512MB cartridges and using their own microcode to go past stock graphics. The only thing that prevented them from seeing these projects to fruition was Nintendo working them to the bone on other projects, which Rare didn't mind doing as they had built a trustworthy enough relationship with them.
What you always hear people say about the Microsoft purchase is "hurr well Rare was shit anyway by that point" which is nowhere even close to the truth. If they were so valueless then why the fuck did Miyamoto give them one of his most popular franchises to use as an introduction to the gamecube? Would you believe me if I told you they baited Rare to change this game here to SFA because it would have looked better as a final title for the N64 over Majora's ask or mogged Wind Waker as a launch title for the Gamecube? They had nothing other than Luigi's mansion, super monkey ball and Mario Kart when GCN released. Rares titles would have embarrassed Nintendo's planned first party games. They were becoming absolutely scared shitless of how good Rare was so they milked them as much as they could until Microsoft blindsided everyone with their offer.

Rare was in fact, a part of the industry that was very different from the rest.
It was guys from the UK who dealt with mostly the ZX spectrum, and maybe the commodore. If you know anything about those platforms, you understand exactly why Rare was what it was.

Nintendo literally means something along the lines of "leave luck to the heavens".
I have to agree with you. Nintendo's creative genius is the byproduct of Hiroshi Yamauchi's cut-throat ruthlessness and strategizing.
>create multiple R&D labs
>task each with saving the company
>treat them all like children
>good performance = favorite son
>bad performance = i have no son

DKR has too static a difficulty and way less interesting items.

Once you're good enough then that's it, the CPU barely fucks with you and the same time will always yield the same result. This is also a result of the lack of rubber banding, for better or worse.

This makes it a fun single player, but more boring multiplayer.

Both of these facts are ultimately because of Rare. The first being delayed a year because Shiggy himself said B&K was better from a technical aspect that he would have been embarrassed to release it at the time. The second was admitted by Nintendo's marketing department, even preferring Rare's ventures into 3d to be more influential than starfox.
