I have a vivid image of 2004 ingrained in my mind, so everything I've played that year (but especially during summer) evokes certain kinds of flashbacks.
Games like Counter Strike: Condition Zero, Sonic Adventure DX, Neighbors from Hell, Shadow of Destiny, Civilization, Warcraft and Heroes 3 are all hitting that nostalgia spot.

Sonic feels like home. I've invested an unhealthy amount of time in free roam only, just running around adventure fields and looking for possible new secrets. Or riding cars.

Fallout
I know it's not exactly a normal game topic on /vr/ but the game came out in 1997 and exudes a feeling of despair and finality.
When I feel too pained by the forward motion of reality today I retreat to Fallout and soak in that feeling of violence crossed with the edge of nothingness that seemed so real to me as I sat in front of a glowing CRT in a basement at the end of the millennium

Pokémon Red and Gold are just unfiltered nostalgia, start playing them and I am taken back to the early 2000s summers playing my GBC while watching Ed, Edd & Eddy, Sakura Card Captor, Pokemon and Toonami, after that I would spend the rest of the day playing soccer with my cousins. I don't give a damn about the new Pokemon games anymore outside of the porn, though.

to be honest, a lot of the games I've played have lost this "time capsule" effect for me after I've replayed them. and many feel literally "timeless" now, e.g. you could easily replay SMW or Super Metroid or SF2 or Diablo today and not feel like you're playing a game from 20-30 years ago. classics like SM64 get brought up so often, it's like they came out last year.
so… weird as it sounds, I might miss crap that actually feels "aged". something that really makes you say that no one makes games like these anymore. or stuff that was actually forgotten by most. and also stuff that I used to play, but never replayed because I fear that I'd lose patience after 3 minutes and see just how basic those babby games were. e.g.: Boogerman, adventure games, crappy shareware games, Miniclip games, etc.

>> No.10090287

>>10090264
Sounds like you've burned out a little from having too much games available.

I still like to play all that you've listed from time to time, and enjoy it (not as much as I've should but anyway).

Miniclip games were never meant to play for too long, they're "minis", it's something you'll entertain yourself with during a break.

> something that really makes you say that no one makes games like these anymore
There's a whole bunch of weird experimental games from late 90s and early 2000s that no one ever attempted to recreate (even modern indie devs). Cookie's Bustle, Seventh Cross: Evolution, Aquanaut's Holiday, Intelligent Cube, all that stuff. I suggest to look for them as a last resort, but you really should take a break and distance from games for at least two-three weeks.

>> No.10090347

Almost any retro game that I played back in it's time conjures up some sort of memory, anecdote or vague warm and fuzzy feeling for me. For 2009? I had gotten a decent job and had someone I know build a bad ass gaming PC for me, so I was spending a lot of time playing TF2 and Starcraft 2. My job involved me staying up all night and I wouldn't break that schedule on my nights off so I have a lot of fond memories of staying up all night playing PC games. Unfortunately, one of the cooling fans on the PC broke and the motherboards ended up getting overheated really bad and it was never the same after that.

It's no use getting mad at the people who look back fondly to the time they were 9. Let's be fair, they had no control over their world when they were 9, they also had no control over the fact that they were 9. Sure someone like me born decades earlier can see how 2009 was garbage and things peaked between 95 and 99 especially if you were at least old enough to drive by then, but they can't possibly know that.

You're no different, you have the same nostalgia goggles strapped on as them. Nothing peaked. What happened was that the entity people call "AAA gaming" sought out a different audience and we got left behind. Now all the money funds normie friendly trash and we have to scrape the AA and indie market to find anything decent. You either accept that fact, or move on to a new hobby.

I remember playing it at friend's house when I was like 9, and I was mindblown by it: all those unit/enemy designs, portraits, music, voice acting, and that amazing map screen. For me it's Candy Crisis (AKA Skittles) for Mac OS 8 and 9. It was a Puyo clone with some custom graphics and a bunch of 90s MODs for a soundtrack. It takes me right back to 1999. I've been playing it as a sort of ritual in order to prepare my soul for time travel back into my former vessel. On a certain numerologically signifcant day in the not so distant future I will commit sudoku and time travel back to childhood while maintaining my current memories and personality.

Also here's a download link for anons who want to play a port on Windows, Linux, and even Mac.

>Front Mission 3 & 4
I lived out in the massive housing development that was out in the middle of nowhere. People lived here to buy massive McMansions on the cheap. Anyhow, it was over 110degrees in the summer so it was too hot to do shit. I would play Gundam games (I had Federation v Zeon, Zeonic Front, Encounters in Space and Gundam v Zeta Gundam), Armored Core games (I had all the PS2), ZoE, and the Front Mission games. I basically spent my summers watching TV (Toonami, AS, KotH, Simpsons, MTV) and playing vidya. A lot of my friends had divorced parents so they would go visit their other parent during the summer. It was boring and lonely. Still, I have a lot of fond memories of these games.

I played Digital Devil Story recently. I hadn't played it before, but it gave me vicarious nostalgia imagining people playing it in Japan in 1987 before I was born.

Also Yu-No but for 1996 which was after I was born. Oh yeah and Kojima's VN's and Metal Slader Glory.

Based. SA1 is janky but it's extremely soulful. If you're not already aware the PC version of DX is amazing when patched and arguably the definitive version of the game, restoring the lighting engine of the Dreamcast version among other things:

My guy! I was and still am a huge /m/echa fag. So many memories just flooded. My parents were upper middle class, so we had a lot of money growing up.
