This is a very strange console. I finally got around to emulating it.

Pros:
>Best version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo (imo)
>Excellent port of Samurai Shodown as well
>Excellent rail shooters (especially Burning Soldier, Starblade, and Total Eclipse)
>Platformer selection is surprisingly good
>Adult games are a fun quirk, even if they're bad

Cons:
>Almost nothing else besides shovelware

The racing games are okay, nothing spectacular (I enjoyed Road Rash on SEGA CD more, oddly). I have yet to try the FPS games, some of the other FMV games like Strahl, or Lucienne's Quest. The JP/KO exclusives I played so far were all pretty bad. Any recommendations for 3DO?

Brain Dead, captain quazar, need for speed

The 3DO is such a weird console, the library feels like a shit post at times. It’s just in this uncanny valley of game development where consoles released and were immediately underpowered or close to it, how to do 3D from a technical and gameplay/artistic perspective was up in the air, there was more competition, etc.

I always keep a library of 3DO roms but once you’ve played the great and the decent/good it falls off hard.

3DO development was supposedly a pain in the arse for everyone involved due to its relatively new hardware. programmers not familiar at all with ARM, the tools were apparently terrible, and a hardware base that wasn't completed until the last moment. this is why many games look mid, because they simply couldn't take full advantage of the hardware.

It has the only home port of Alone in the Dark for some baffling reason. The sequel got a PS/SS release. This is historically important, since Shinji Mikami says that during development of Biohazard (Resident Evil), he came across Alone in the Dark, and used that as the model for the game which up until that point they weren't sure what to make. Given the time-frame, the 1994 3DO version is the most likely version Mijami came across. meaning without the 3DO, it's entirely possible the Biohazard series would have never been anywhere near as big.

We may very well have gotten a first person zombie game with crude graphics called Biohazard that everyone forgot about.

3DO is fascinating as the only western console the Japanese truly seemed to embrace.

>> No.10089113

>>10089019
It was just the lack of standards that devs found attractive.
>Famicom in Japan is a bit of a wild west in regards to releases with fuck all quality control
>When it's introduced in the west as NES, Nintendo also comes up with the Seal of Quality
>This quality control is so succesful that it's gonna be imported back to Japan when the Super Famicom comes out
>SFC games are released when Nintendo wants, if Nintendo wants, and they'll be whatever kinda games Nintendo wants
>a lot of devs are either forced to close their doors, shift platforms or spread wide open for Nintendo
>many of them move over to the PC Engine CD and PC-98
>a few years into the terror reign of Nintendo however word is coming out that there's gonna be a new guy in town
>3DO is a console coming from some of the people behind Electronic Arts, in partnership with Panasonic
>devkits are simple plug-n-play cards for common Macintosh computers, dev documentation and support in Japanese is provided by Panasonic and it's fantastic, games costs almost nothing to publish and there's barely any creative control from 3DO or Panasonic
>on top of that the system is fairly powerful with 3D capabilities
And so developers moved over to the 3DO for a brief moment. Until the PlayStation came out with pretty much all the same advantages less than a year later, but with Sony marketing behind it for much increased game and console sales.

But there's also GoldStar 3DO Interactive Multiplayer (which might have been better than the Panasonic models), as well as Sanyo 3DO in Japan and Samsung 3DO in Korea, even an expansion card by Creative for making your PC compatible with 3DO games. I've always had mixed feeling about having only one controller port, and daisy-chaining controllers together.
On one hand, there's no need for a multitap. All you need is another controller to play multiplayer games. You can have up to eight players this way. On the other, more connections means there's more to go wrong with possibility of having a bad connection. It's also way easier for one player to ruin the game by purposely disconnecting other players.

I'm using Opera on RetroArch with a Lenovo Chromebook Duet. Most games are at or close to full speed but it depends on the game it seems. I did take a break from 3DO to play some PS1 but Soccer Kid, Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown, Road Rash, Mind Teazzer all ran fine with no issues. Have not tried Gex or Johnny Bazookatone but I'm assuming they're fine as well. Some of the Japanese jankware like AutoBahn Tokio doesn't run very well but that doesn't matter since those games aren't very good anyway. A fully 3D Alone in the Dark inspired game. Shocked so few talk about it. Frame rate is utter shit because holy hell this game pushes the 3DO's 3D really god damn hard. It's single digits in some camera view modes. You have the option of 3rd person or first person which is super interesting.

This game's basically a glorified tech demo but it's a pretty fun one and very impressive for 1994, with graphics rivaling most early PS1 and Saturn games. It was later ported to the Saturn and 3DO.

Return Fire is a really cool tank game that was ported elsewhere but I think it actually has an exclusive expansion called Maps O' Death.

PO'ed and Killing Time are weird and interesting Doom-era FPS's that originally came out on 3DO but honestly the PS1 and PC ports run much better.

Lucienne's Quest is the only notable JRPG for the console. Not an amazing game and the framerate is nauseating but it's there if you like the genre. Allegedly the Saturn version isn't any better and never got translated or localized either. There's also Guardian War but it's more of a tactical RPG and it doesn't have shit on contemporaries like Ogre Battle or Shining Force.

Need for Speed on 3DO is significantly different from the PS1, PC, and Saturn versions, it's a slower-paced game but some people might prefer that and the graphics were state-of-the-art for consoles at the time.

Trip'd is a neat puzzle game from the same devs as D, which was ported to the PS1 but only in Japan.

Doctor Hauzer's a neat survival horror-esque 3D Adventure game with a cult following, never released outside of Japan but it has a fan translation.

Blade Force and Immercenary are flawed but interesting and unique games that were never ported to anything else.

Wolfenstein 3D, Wing Commander III, Star Control II, The Incredible Machine, Alone in the Dark 1 and 2, Syndicate, Theme Park, Myst, Novastorm, the Putt-Putt games, Samurai Shodown, Flashback, Out of this World, Lemmings, Mad Dog McCree, D, and Space Hulk are all neat games that got decent-if-not-great ports for 3DO.

I forgot to mention Bust-A-Move, Captain Quazar, and Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller which are all decent games in their respective genres.

Next I'm gonna list a bunch of shitpost shovelware that generally aren't considered good but I personally think are funny since these are the type of games the 3DO was infamous for:

>Plumbers Don't Wear Ties
>Virtuoso
>Shadow: War of Succession
>Way of the Warrior

>Sex
>Supermodels Go Wild
>Iron Angel of the Apocalypse
>Twisted: The Game Show
>Off-World Interceptor
>Station Invasion
>Night Trap, Sewer Shark, and Corpse Killer (all Sega CD ports)
>The Horde featuring Kirk Cameron of Saving Christmas fame
>Jurassic Park
>Ballz 3D Director's Cut (what an honor!)
>Johnny Bazookatone (honestly great presentation but unlike Gex the gameplay is dogshit)
