Old Craigslist Thread died, but opportunities to find deals/laugh at resellers never die.

As always: post deals, rages, and misc./unusual postings

Starting off with a rage-worthy post, these go for $20 at my flea market and even that seems a lot.

It's a simple formula.
Find Sold Auctions for a cart near the condition mine is in

Find a happy middle ground where you have wiggle room to let someone haggle you if they want.

It's not rocket science.

Perfectly understandable, the only problem IMO is that the eBay market is based off instant gratification and compulsion. People will, in times of stress/desire, pay much more than they would for an item that could be easily found, with patience, for less (especially when coupled with a time limit and bid wars.)

That's why most of /vr/ doesn't utilize eBay pricing when hunting or for things like BST threads.

/vr/'s beef with resellers primarily comes from a few factors: they're a big factor in the retro bubble/inflation, they take advantage of uninformed consumers, and often refuse to haggle prices (they don't care about customers or business and simply wait for a casual buyer to buy at their price.)

Not all resellers are scum and there's definitely nothing wrong with selling retro vidya; however when you buy games for the sole purpose of flipping (especially at an exorbitant price), it's seen as rather unethical conduct and frowned upon here.

It's actually a pretty good price. The poster is pretty big at 3 by 2 feet. That would sell for $10 if in print and new at a wal mart. A cheap fake wood frame with a plastic cover sells for like $15-20. So a decent, large, out of print Zelda poster in glass frame could easily appeal for that price.

Also, people might be filtering searches to exclude listings under a certain CL price amount. People do that all the time to skip past the "$1" SEO guys. Sucks for people like you who really don't have a single price to list for any one thing. However, I do NOT recommend putting some random price on your ad. People will see the fake price, know it's a ruse to get bypass filters, then flag you. If you want, come up with a walk-away price for the whole thing and list that in the price field. At least it will be legit and nobody will flag you for it.

In my area, lots of people flag even minor rule violations like it's our job. I do too, and I take it responsibly (as in, NO spite-flagging). Sometimes people e-mail with a heads-up, but that's rare. It's up to the seller to figure out what he's doing wrong, leading him to the forums if necessary.

The reason I'm curious is because there are instances where entire UPCs have been reused for different products. As I understand it, the manufacturer part has to be the same, but the item part can be whatever. So manufacturers have (knowingly or unknowingly) reissued the same item part of a UPC, effectively reusing the entire UPC. I saw it myself years and years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember the two games, and no, they were not bootlegs, and I was not comparing an EAN to a UPC or anything like that. (It's enough of a problem that I've actually seen legit retail stores print the old, wrong product name for new items on shelf price tags.)

If some individual seller is going just by UPC when listing games on a marketplace that goes by UPC, buyers have the potential to be screwed into buying the wrong item.

This is why image mixups on ebay, half, amazon, etc. can be cause for concern.

Usually lurk /vr/, but I'll bite for this post.

Resellers, like any merchant-type, range a large swathe of types from "Selling my collection from when I was a kid. Letting someone else experience the magic" to the worst of the worst, what I call the "Happy Merchant Friends of the Vidya World". The former types are usually the types you meet at yard sales, flea market stalls (The rent-a-stalls rented on the fringes in a one-shot by families looking for higher return than a yard sale, not the inside ones. Inside Stalls have high rent costs and are likely to house the "Happy Merchant" variety.) and other informal markets. They range from legit retro gamers to grandparents who are getting rid of their grandkid's old systems to clear out space in the old shed. They are also the most likely to deal with you honestly.

The other half of the equation, is the "Happy Merchant" flavor of reseller. These are the ones you see trying to sell "1337 Supa Maweeo 3 RARE Mint Condition Retro Game Pack!!!!" for $200 on eBay and Craigslist. Both you and I know that there's no way that cart would cost that much legit, barring artificial inflation by the seller (Hell, even back in the day, Game Carts were $60-90, so even adjusting for inflation and condition, that better be one of the first ones off the factory line to justify) but because the seller knows there's some ignorant tool out there, with no idea what it's actually worth, that will pay the price for it, he marks it up. These are the unethical, greedy and utterly unbearable sellers of the retro vidya world.

Picture a cart that you've wanted for a long time, you finally find it, but it's marked up at 5X it's "Uninflated" market value. You know it's worth nowhere near that, so you try to haggle it down. He refuses. Then he strikes up conversation, and finds you've been looking for this cart for awhile. Now he's going to mark it up even further, because "Demand just went up," namely because (Continued)

>> No.1031987

>>1031981
Continued from ^
you expressed an interest in said cart. It's already marked up to kingdom come, and just because you wanted to buy it, he's going to try to jew even more money from you.

I can stand the resellers that fall into the former category. In fact, I get along with them quite well, and we share all sorts of nostalgia mid-transaction. The latter can just go step on a lego, then die in a fire.

If I were to run into this douche, I'd either tell him to get lost, and not to show up at the yard sale for trying to be a general douche (Thus giving precedent for calling the police for a "Tresspasser", "Hello, 911? There's this really creepy guy that's been hanging around my property, and I've told him to leave, quite adamantly. He keeps coming onto my property. Could you send an officer to investigate what he's doing here? Thanks, my address is XXXXXX") or I'd just be a dick and start stocking some empty/fried carts to hand off to him. Or, barring that, burn some Justin Bieber Tracks to CD and stick Disc Cover Desing Label Stickers on top so when he pops it into his PS2/Xbox/PS1/DC he gets "Baybee, baybee, Baybee OHHHH!" playing through his speakers.

But seriously? I'd just search elsewhere. If he sticks to garage sales in your county, go two counties over for Garage Sales. Then again, I'm really patient when it comes to my retro vidya. Owing partly to my tendency for Emu's for abandonware. Barring that, there's not much else you can do, aside from reporting his possibly delinquent taxes to the IRS office. Douchebaggery is a bad social choice, but it isn't illegal, so there's not much you CAN do to shut it down but to discourage it, and even then it's his choice.

I hope it's ok to ask this here. I don't want to make another thread and I'm not actually putting anything up for sale at this time.
Is Illusion of Gaia or Secret of Evermore worth selling or should I just hang onto them? Both have boxes and Illusion of Gaia has the manual and map. The Illusion of Gaia box and manual have slight water damage. The cart was not involved in said damage. It was safely inside the SNES. And I still have the cardboard insert and Nintendo Power order form. There's a Super Power Club Starfox poster too. It has ads on the back for various SNES games and accessories.

Secret of Evermore was bought used and has the cardboard insert, manual and map. But the map was always ripped between the folds. Manual's a little beat up too.

Both cartridges are very clean. I took care of my stuff. Sadly I moved around a lot and my sister's friends stole almost everything I had before my last move.

I've considered selling them since I no longer have an SNES and I just emulate now (space and money issues). I'm not a collector really. And I'd hate myself for price gouging anyone. But losing almost all my 8 and 16 bit stuff just made me feel so bad even looking at the remainder.

I don't know. I bought it used maybe in '97 for $6.99. I imagine it's worth a bit more now. Amazon says $20 for crappy yellowing loose carts with bad labels. That made me lol. I'd take less even though mine is complete but the packaging is a bit beat up. As I said, I'm not selling anything right now. I also can't test it at this time so the battery may no longer work. That's part of the problem too. If I can't test something I can't guarantee it. The cart should be fine. It's never had any issues.

I also found Skuljagger and Super Castlevania IV just now. I should have never let my sister's kids use them. Now I have to hunt down the boxes and manuals. I imagine Skuljagger is only worth $1 or so.

I don't want to take up people's time since I'm not looking to sell right now. I was just curious.

A few tips:
1. You could have looked up what the real thing looks like.
2. Even without doing that, you could have zoomed in and seen that the same badge is on every other game as well.
3. I don't think it ever came in a jewel case version like the one in the pic, which is the 3-in-1 version.
4. You can't tell by the outside (manual or back insert) on the long case version either.
5. You have to look at the disc and also look for the extra manual (which like anything can be missing if the set is incomplete).

Not the guy you're quoting on Goldman Sachs, but he does raise a valid point, if satirically so.

To use the SMB/DH analogy, saying "It's the fault of the market" that one guy bought a cart for $20 is bullshit. For all we know, it could have been a 9-yr-old babby with a fuckton of money from grandma spending at the flea market. There's plenty of unscrupulous/ignorant dealers that mark up their merchandise far beyond what it's worth. Browsing through the thread, I see a couple of posts that mention shit that has been reposted over several months to CL, even though they had no takers.

Point being, this "Invisible Hand of the Market" bullshit is used to excuse fuckery all too often. If I were selling a Ford Pinto for $80,000, that doesn't mean it's a bad market, it means I'm either a bad salesman (If it doesn't sell), or an unscrupulous one (Also excusable, but much more excusable to frown upon, even if it's a legit transaction).

Part of this, I blame on the Internet being used as a marketplace for physical products. Previously, with B&M Stores, you had to use physical shelf-space to hold stock. Space that meant money invested as long as it sat there unsold, because that meant less space going to products that moved quickly. Now people can reupload the same ad to CL or eBay, asking whatever price they want, until some tool decides to buy.

In short, limitations of shelf space ensured prices remained somewhat controlled, because things were priced to move. In today's net commerce economy, that limitation is removed, so not only do you have that, you have every unscrupulous dealer moving in without those built-in price controls. Of course prices are going to go bonkers and form constant bubbles/deflation.

Also, in all fairness, we're working with economic theories that are over a century old, in some cases. And these theories were developed before their founders had any idea of the speed with which money and commodities could be moved today.

Let's look at your $80K Pinto example. Will it ever sell for that much, or will you have to adapt to the reality of the market if you ever want to sell it? Is the demand for Pintos high enough that you can squeeze anything close to $80K out of anyone? Will you be called a Pinto hoarder by anyone not willing to pay it? Are you in cahoots with CarStop? How mad should I be at you?

If a game or system goes unsold, that's no reason to get angry.

>>1043361
This is an excellent example of the market working as it should. Something common and overpriced is not selling. Time to get angry...?

>>1043389
GameStop is indeed a huge problem, and it is very wise and polite of you to realize that they are a separate entity from individual game resellers.

>> No.1043518

Pinto Example anon here. The guy selling the Pinto in my example is generally not going around and buying every POS Pinto from anyone who is selling one to markup at $80K, but if anything, when a person points out that it's too high a price and you get treated like you're trying to Jew them out of a good deal, you should be mad at the attitude you got, rather than the high price. That's what I'm seeing in this thread, mostly, is butthurt at the way they're treated as customers. I'd feel the same way if I were treated like that by a seller. However, I'm a bit more subtle when it comes to the haggling game. I wouldn't even point out the outrageous price. If I think it's slightly overpriced, I'll try to talk the guy down by about $5-10. However, even then, I'd still be offended if I was treated the way some Anons have mentioned in this thread simply for the "Offense" of trying to haggle.

It's a business transaction between two equal entities, as far as I'm concerned. Just as the Seller is, and should be, free to alter the terms of the deal before closing it, so should the Buyer. You wouldn't just accept the sticker price on a new car, or the first quote the Mortgage Broker gave you, so why should it be the same with any other transaction between two business agents? (Giant retail stores are another thing, since their prices are set by Corporate.) Getting butthurt about a customer trying to haggle shows your insecurity and unscrupulousness as a businessman. Even if your price is firm, there are ways of letting them know without being a dick about it. That seems to be the big gripe, from what I've seen ITT. People laugh at the fuckall prices, but when they try to talk the guy down and get told 'Don't waste my goddamned time, faggot', I can sympathize with the aggravation.

Pinto Anon again. As I've mentioned several times in this thread previously, I don't have a problem with resellers, as a group. Despite having started my gaming years on retro machines (For context, my first machine used to play any type of game outside of monopoly or battleship was a TI-99. Hunt the Wumpus, ahh, nostalgia...), I see resellers as a way to keep the old game scene alive, and to "Keep the magic flowing", if you will.

My personal complaint boils down to disliking unscrupulous sellers, and the general rude/hostile attitude that tends to come with them. Maybe it's just because I spend so much time on other boards, but the only time I've seen "Reseller" used with such a loathsome context here, is when it's used in these "CL/Reseller Rage" threads. If it weren't for resellers, we'd be stuck with Nintendo's (Or [Insert Vidya Corporation Name of your choice here]'s) Virtual Console option to play /vr/ material on controllers that were never designed to play them. A shitty lone option, if you ask me. Everyone has their own opinion, of course, but for me, what is anathema is treating potential customers that are sticking within the rules of acceptable business behavior (Namely, haggling) like they're trying to cheat you out of a good deal. Both parties should be free to alter the deal until they come to a conclusion both feel comfortable with. In the age of Corporate Commerce, people have forgotten the fine art of civil business affairs. And the sad part is, more often than not, it seems the Proprietor that forgets his ethics and business courtesy, rather than the customer. Just my $0.02.

>> No.1046161

That's fine.

Where we differ the most is probably in expectations of other people. I feel strongly that either party should feel comfortable enough to propose reasonable modification of the terms of the final deal, such as requesting that the price be lowered or requesting a specific form of payment. I also feel strongly that it is within the rights of the other party not to yield to those requests. Nobody has to like it, but a grown adult will respect it.

The proper outcome of such a standstill isn't that bad or serious: The seller doesn't sell the item and the buyer doesn't buy it. The deal doesn't close. That's the absolute bottom line. We're not talking about some essential commodity like aluminum or some overpriced old clunker like Pintos, we're talking about games. Toys. That bottom line isn't so bad when it comes to deals over toys.

Speaking of which, FAO Schwarz, that overpriced toy store, now only operates 1 store, down from at least 40, and is now owned by Toys`R'Us. And Wal-Mart, a company known for being extremely shrewd with supplier pricing, is America's top toy retailer. The market dictated who would succeed.
