Once a tranny posted on here that he was forced to read advanced books as a kid and got vidya as a reward, and after getting through some Philip K. Dick he saw a Sailor Moon-looking game called Valis. Apparently he thought he was having a nervous breakdown at age eight or whatever.

Stuck in my mind because that really seems like the kind of thing to happen in one of his books.

When a kid loses innocence in that way (creepy way to say it) it can make them feel like they don't know what's real, so if the world of being forced to read weird shit intruded on the world of vidya, it makes sense that it would fuck him up.

I played through 1 - 3 and part of 4 earlier this year. It was fun for the most part but the difficulty was all over the place, especially 3. That stupid water level took forever, and the final boss was damn near impossible if you didn’t beat it on the first try with power ups.
I got to some church looking level in 4 before I lost my patience, I’ll probably go back at some point though.

Anyway, Valis is still an action sidescroller, and though the gameplay differs, it still has a similar pacing to Castlevania. You could try it to see if you like. Mugen Senshi Valis for the PC Engine CD is a good recommendation, since its a remake of the first game and one of the least janky entries in the series.

You can play them on the PC Engine. Keep in mind that Valis 2 is the oldest one, and plays like an NES game. Valis 1 is the newest one.
In addition, 1 and 3 on the Genesis are also fun. 1 is completed different to the PC Engine, while 3 is a slightly cut down version of the same game.
None of these games are amazing, so temper your expectations.

When I say plays like an NES game, I mean it plays like a mediocre NES sidescroller, not that it plays like Valis 1 on NES. Valis 1 on NES is not very good and I don't recommend it. I also don't recommend either 1 or 2 on the PC-88/98. They look cool in stills and the music is amazing, but the games run at slideshow framerates.

They are separate games entirely anon (aside from Valis III which is mostly identical). II and III were released in USA on the TurboGrafx-CD but not the other two. You can emulate the original games for TurboGrafx-CD easily just like any other console, all you need is the BIOS and rom, but I do believe they translated the first game on the Switch collection. You don't really need to know Japanese to play it though, it's a basic platformer just like Mega Man. She even has the same slide kick.
