It's always a good time to learn Japanese.
It's just like that old proverb from Japan.... "the best time to buy a geneticarry engineeled catgilr was 20 yeals ago, the second best time to buy a geneticarry engineeled catgilr is today"
Jokes aside, you can reach a level where you can decently play most games (although you might need a guide while you wouldn't need one if playing in English) in Japanese in just a few months. You can check the DJT threads on /int/ and /jp/.

I wish the Japs had the same sense for preservation of this sort of thing as we do. It's fun to pore over old pokemon guides like the kind you'd bring to school to show your friends, and I want to see the ones that Japs would have been doing the same thing with too.

No, they scan them. I've been collecting them off Japanese sites for the past few months. I have several hundred gigs so far. Mostly zipped JPEGs, but also some PDFs.
Not sure if I have a Japanese guide for MM, but I did download a SM64 guide the other day. Which I only did out of hoarding instinct because I don't even like SM64.
The really interesting thing (to me) is I have some books which are like "guide to old computer adventure games" which contain screenshots and story overviews of old 8-bit computer games I've never even heard of before. The games honestly look terrible, but these books were published around 2000 so evidently someone in Japan cares about these old games.

Do it, I don't really give a shit about your argument, just learn the language. It's a beautiful language, a beautiful culture, beautiful people and beautiful country. You'll get to enjoy raw Japanese vidya and anime raw as well if you're into that.
Learn Hiragana first, then katakana, and then some vocabulary and play something like an old Famicom game, maybe a kid's SFC game (JP Mario RPG has Hiragana and Katakana) to put skills to use, and learn Kanji.

There are a large number of horror games that were never localised, so learning Japanese really comes in for that genre too.

Rule of Rose is still $100 for a Japanese copy and that wasn't one of the more expensive ones.

Nope. I own one of those. You need to reset the console in order to save your games. I'm technologically illiterate as to the real reason why, but I want to say that resetting the console makes the cartridge flush the data currently flashed to it to the SD card.

With the cheaper carts like that chink clone, you need to reset the console so the save data is actually written to the SD card. If the power goes out the save data that was in the RAM is lost. The Everdrive 64 X7 saves without having to reset but it's also $200 USD

People that play retro games are mega stingy. If it isn't 1.99 to them then they think it's a rip off. They're always looking for an excuse to complain rather than play video games.
>It's too expensive
Emulate
>But I want pure accuracy
Flash cart or mod the console with a HDD/burned games
>That's too pricey
Still cheaper than buying the actual games
>But I want to have the actual games but cheaper
Then get a time machine.

Not only that but such people only have surface level interest in a console and go for the expensive cult classics, the expensive RPGs/Survival Horror, or the well known games. You can pick up Forsaken 64 for ten bucks, same with Chopper Attack. People have to branch out more.

I say do all three in addition to anything and everything else.
I do think visual novels are the most efficient, but different things will work better or worse for different people. More importantly, exposing yourself to lots of different forms of Japanese will challenge you in different ways, which is important for your growth.
And playing a game in Japanese can be great practice. The game itself is Japanese, when you have trouble you look up a guide in Japanese, then after you finish it you read sexy doujins about it in Japanese. Top shelf shit right there.

It's because PAL and NTSC-J copies have low demand. Even though UAE copies are NTSC-U they also have low demand compared to NTSC-U copies because of the PAL ribbon on the spine on some generations, the slip in paper, and the mark on the back denoting it as a UAE version.
It simply isn't wanted outside of its home region because of the boxart, it not being the home region's version, potential region incompatibilities depending on the generation, censored content, or PAL genuinely being worse than NTSC-U and J until what, gen 6?
