I'm looking for /vr/ arcade/kart racers that have the best single-player content. Is pic related the one to beat?

CTR and Diddy Kong Racing are both good for that I think. The others had a more standard grand prix campaign

Yes, and I don't think it's been surpassed as a single-player kart experience. Some of the most fun I've had was just driving and power sliding throughout the hub world looking for random jumps to boost over.

decent single player with an interesting attempt at a story:
>lots of cutscenes that are canon to the series
>nice soundtrack
https://youtu.be/FDmfDScLpvo
>good variety of events and tracks
>semi-realistic attempt at physics instead of typical kart racing mechanics (also a bad thing)

but...
>no hub world
>bland weapons, most of them being interchangeable or useless
>unforgiving physics combined with egregiously bad rubber-banding AI
the most annoying thing is that you will inevitably get destroyed with an unblockable weapon as soon as you get ahead. on normal difficulty, the AI will generously not get too far and you can come back in any race. in fact, you can drive like complete ass, not know anything about the track, crash into every turn, and still have high odds of winning from the very last weapon roll you get before the finish. thrilling the first few times, but you quickly realize how much the game is rigging every outcome. on the harder difficulty (hero mode), you can still do that and get lucky a few times, but in general you will be eating shit until you've learned the tracks inside and out and perfected your driving. even then, you'll still be eating a lot shit from the AI blue-orbing your ass at every turn. It's so unfathomably bad that for certain tracks you have to learn the general "kill-points" where you need to strategically give up your lead in order to have a half-way decent shot at winning. the grind for unlockables is also a bit ridiculous, but I didn't mind it too much. mastering the game is satisfying, but it's also damn painful at the same time. Not a bad game by any means, but CTR was just way more enjoyable overall.

forgot to mention it has a vehicle upgrade system and your vehicle type does matter quite a bit for a few of the different challenges, so you have to be somewhat strategic with the upgrades. unfortunately, upgrading speed to the max really fucks up your handling. oh well, one more reason to git gud.

now that I'm thinking even more about, I would say that 90% of the game felt really good to play. the other 10% was ulcer-inducing, but only because I approached it with the same mindset as CTR, which despite being the same company could not have been more different. there's a few points where you have to just grit your teeth, accept that devs fucked it up, and play it with patience.
otherwise it's blast. or just don't autistically play hero mode

what are the best cart racers from the PS2 era?

Ddkr is probably the most packed single player kart game I know of. I prefer the ds version but thats due to ease of playing quickly.
