Yeah the PS2 was a pretty powerful console. The dreamcast had a lot going for it but it was just older. There’s lots of simple what ifs like “what if 32mb ram” or “what if DVD/1gb CD” but it has what it has. I dont think anyone is going to argue that the Dreamcast is more powerful than the PS2. I do like it’s clean graphics though

Virtua Fighter 3tb is probably more comparable, but even then I feel like this is after both series kind of established their own style. It makes more sense with the Saturn and PS1 titles.

Native res aside, I do miss the days when 3D graphics were this crisp and visually clear. Bold colors, carefully baked in lighting, very little use of obnoxious screen filling fog and color filters, and a level of contrast you just don't see any more. I would love to see modern devs ditch all the Unreal presets, color sapping fog and scanned in actors for 3D models to create basically an upgraded evolution of PS2 graphics aesthetics. In the very early days of the PS3 you kind of saw games like that and it was very appealing.

It blows my mind that the PS2 version of Tekken Tag Tournament is actually graphically superior to the arcade original. Tekken Tag's arcade hardware is effectively an original PlayStation game, while the PS2 version looks like, well, a PS2 game.

Wow, no kidding. I grew up with the 80s/90s mindset of arcade=superior, so it's really weird to me to find out that some games which I'd only seen on home consoles were graphically superior to the arcade versions (and in these two cases dramatically so).

A lot of people have picked up from all the remakes coming out now that there's a fundamental lack of understanding of lighting across the whole industry. So often you see the same generic washes with no dynamics at all due to the preset issue you mentioned, this was hardware from 20+ years ago but they weren't afraid to use every trick they had so it still looks striking. Ridge Racer 7 comes to mind for a PS3 example of what you mentioned, 1080P 60FPS and looks gorgeous. It might use baked lighting and camera trickery to pull it off but who gives a fuck?

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Ride Racer 7 still looks really pleasing on a 4K TV and its an excellent game too. Virtua Fighter 5 is another good example.

Soul Caliber 6 is smeared with depth of field so you literally can't even see the fucking stages. Like, why do this? The stages have always been so visually impressive in scale and architecture and then they just thought "you know what we should do?
