I'm trying to get into Tomb Raider and decided to start off with the first game but it's so miserable to play. My jumps are delayed, I'm at the mercy of the wonky camera and the fighting so far has been fucking awful. Am I being filtered? Do I stay with it or try a later entry?

>> No.10069365

>Am I being filtered?
Yes. And you don't understand how controls work with respect to map grid.

>> No.10069412

>>10069308
Give Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary and Underworld a try they're probably more your speed.

>> No.10069420

The only thing wonky about the camera is when you have your back to the wall. Otherwise it's always trailing behind you when you aren't hanging on something.

do laras home and listen to what she says when you enter the gym, its a tutorial but you can skip parts of it if you run ahead if you cba to do that
hold walk and walk to the edge of a jump, let go of walk and tap backwards to backstep, hold forward and immediately press jump, she wont jump until she reaches the edge and always guarantees a max range jump
stick with it, the controls don't fundamentally change in the sequels but they do get slightly more responsive with each instalment

>> No.10069613

>>10069420
this is never an issue in the first game because in those situations where your backs against a wall like that its only ever a straight forward jump anyways, in tomb raider 3 however....

>My jumps are delayed
The game is grid based if you look carefully on the map. When you run and press jump, you will jump at the edge of current "square". Retro TR is almost like a logic game, where each jump is set up in a way that you barely make it.
>fighting
You simply start blasting and jump around.

very good responses In this thread surprising since /v/ would just retreat to their shell and affirm the OP's objectively wrong and ignorant understanding of the game mechanics. The only delayed jump in the game is the running jump, and thats only so that it can be mostly consistent and less frustrating to fuck up, because if you constantly had to press it at the edge, I PROMISE you you would cry, because I've done that so many times because I got lazy.

Eventually you just get used to it, infact I'd argue for TR1 atleast, you get SO used to it that by the end of the game, everything starts to feel too easy and consistent, but maybe that's just because From Natla Mines to Atlantis to Great Pyramid the game starts to feel way more rail roaded and not hard to navigate (except for early natla mines maybe)

lmao? is this a troll? the amount of people that complain about getting filtered by TR4 with how fucking crazy ambitious and complicated it is is abundant. TR3 and 4, but especially 3 are all significantly harder than TR1, not sure how to rank 2, definitely probably easier than 3 and 4, but is it as easy as 1, or just slightly harder? Or way harder, but not as hard as 3 and 4?

Nice, same, not OP, but I got Into It around the time tomb raider threads were popping up constantly on /v/. I'm almost done with it now, just have the last stretch of the final level to finish, then I'll be moving on to Tomb Raider 2, just don't know if I should take a break in between to not get burnt out or not.

TR1 by far.
Half of Peru, nearly all of Greece, all of Egypt, and parts of Atlantis are terrific, and even the lesser levels still have merits.
The later games have some great levels too with cool settings and standout moments, but there's also a lot more inconsistency and ideas that were too ambitious for the engine.

>> No.10070417

>>10070387
REALLY?

I mean Greece was a literal knock out with Palace of Midas and St.Francis Folly. But man did the game start to feel like it dragged around Egypt, I guess having a much simpler and consistent level design makes it harder to disappoint and fuck up, but around Egypt to Atlantis, the game started feeling too samey and simple, it was fine in the beginning when you were still getting used to the controls, but after finishing TR1 recently I legit CANNOT imagine it possibly being the peak of TR level design, my brain simply cannot commute, because TR1 often does not feel like ENOUGH.

It has better level design than almost any game of its time, but it definitely has room for evolution...

Also Atlantis was genuinely some linear straightforward bullshit man, I CONSTANTLY felt like I was just going through the motions. Like that first room in Atlantis with all the eggs were you need to go to the floor above and LITERALLY open a switch that opens a door to another switch, that opens the actual door you need to get through???? I was like "bro??? are you serious? what is this level design lmao what was the point?

I'd take a break, I love classic TR but they can feel a bit samey.

felt like rushed design + shitty enemy placement. the hitscan explosions ain't too fun. The earlier levels were much more fun to explore and figure out expect for some weird sequence breaks (and bugs) that prevented progress at times. super cool port tho

>> No.10070498

>>10070493
ah yeah that's a good point. The enemy design ramped up in annoyance in the later areas, maybe that's why I didn't mesh well with the later levels, damn...TR2 is gunna be rough isn't it if it doesn't have anything new to balance out hitscan enemies...

>> No.10070503

>>10070287
TR3 is the least consistent, but I maintain that all of the South Pacific and Antarctica are the best levels in the classic games.Just a pity that India, Nevada and London are garbage.

>> No.10070519

>>10070503
What does "consistent" even mean? Because other than Greece and maybe Egypt, you could argue that Peru, and Atlantis aren't consistent regarding TR1.

Consistent to me isn't about personal favourites, but rather consistent sprawling exploration and platforming puzzles. Peru and Atlantis are both shit to actually explore.

>> No.10070531

>>10069308
The jump delay kind of sucks but just like the controls it isn't a problem once you get used to it. You have more than enough control of the wonky camera, if it defaults to a weird angle just press the look button which you should be doing a lot anyway. This isn't like the original Devil May Cry where the camera just fucks you over and there's nothing you can do about it. It is an immersive and slow, methodical platformer. Make sure you plan out every jump.

>> No.10070535

>>10070519
Just in terms of quality, TR3 is wildly inconsistent. It has some of the best and worst levels in the classics. Whereas TR1 is pretty even in terms of level design, TR2 has a weak middle (all the undersea gubbins) TR5 is consistently poor but with interesting concepts.
Full disclosure: the egypt motif and general structure of TR4 turned me off and I couldn't push myself to keep playing it. That's just me.

>(another stupid underwater labyrinth).

I also hate underwater navigation, but I'm conflicted, because my stomach starts to hurt if I stay underwater too long and can't find rhe way...but underwater exploration just adds a totally new dimension of directional movement and visual perception. It's interesting and keeps gameplay varied, as well as Tomb Raider arguably having the best and most indepth underwater sections in any action adventure game, but pains me both physically and mentally, so Im not sure how to feel about it

I'll assume this isn't a troll thread and OP truly is struggling with it.
Of his two complaints I can only address one. The other, the camera, is false. TR1s camera is pretty much non-intrusive! And it only takes one button press to see what is ahead at any time.
As for the delayed jumps, actually those are purposeful. TR is like a cinematic platformer like Heart of Darkness or Flashback. It follows very precise rules for its controls, and they are all explained in Lara's home. Including the purposeful delay of one grid length.

I like the slowness and clunkyness, it makes me put more effort into controlling Lara.

I have to say that I really like these opensource project that lets you play the old game, without remaking them. So you can feel the essence of the original game, uncorrupted. I really hope in the future, that someone does this even for Soul Reaver, for it was really good it too.

If you walk to an edge, then do a single hop backwards (just move backwards without walking), you will be EXACTLY the right distance away to do a running jump.

Get used to doing midair quickturns and use them in combat, you can effectively avoid damage from most enemies (and some ranged ones by trapping them in a cycle of endlessly turning around) by doing this, also do backflips while shooting at melee enemies.

All of the original games are slow paced environmental puzzle centric like this, so if you fundamentally don't enjoy that then you won't like them.

Tomb Raider 3 is dogshit.

Just download the 7z, extract the file and run it on an emulator. I use PSXfin but it should work fine with any other.

I recommend you do not play it until you've played TR1 to the fullest at least once. Many of enemies are placed smartly to catch you off guard, mind your surroundings before venturing off and quickly wrap your head around a new space if/when you get trapped.
