2D games look like shit on flatscreen CRTs bigger than 14" generally, they suffer from the funhouse mirror effect where it looks like the game is getting unwound from the edges, no amount of geometry adjustments can fix that due to the physical limitations of a flat tube. Old IBM monitor. It's really low resolution (for a PC monitor), so I like how it looks with old games. It's really clean and sharp, but not too sharp. Tri dots have a soft quality to them that I really enjoy.

>>10069431
The scanlines are real. I used Retroarch and a 3840x240 120hz super resolution to get it to do 240p. The 120hz ghosting makes it kind of crappy for a lot of retro games, but lots of N64 games don't run at 60fps. Looks fine for those games.

I'm working in a computer recycling warehouse right now, and we come across CRTs sometimes.
What are some good PC CRTs to look out for? They get sent to scrap(if they're not Apple related), so I want to see if I can save some from being thrashed.

It looks about the same as a 60hz 15khz CRT when playing 30fps games. Maybe even less flicker because of the high refresh rate.

Typically any PC monitor that is 19 inches or bigger is good. Even mid tier PC monitors are becoming more and more scarce. Look for brands like Sony, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Iiyama, NEC, and Eizo.
Some of these brands have rebrands. Things like SGI, Sun, and some Dell monitors are Sony rebrands for example. If it says Trinitron it's Sony. LaCie did Mitsubishi rebrands.

Do you guys bother changing the screen position for every game you play? FFVII on my PS2 is weird. Press triangle and the menus are extended to being off the screen, you can't even see the white outline of the menus on the far right or far left of the screen. But if you adjust your tv screen for that, so it all fits in nicely in the menu, the actual gameplay screen as you walk around the map will have tiny slivers of black bars on the left/right. So I'm content with it overlapping.
Mine is like pic related, but a little more extreme.

i've heard there are good quality component converters. you can probably set a switch to display a 4:3 image being stretched to 16:9 and then a crt wouldn't be able to tell and display it at 4:3, but there might be artifacts from the stretching. i've heard it's possible to trick switches into outputting in 4:3 but i don't know if it's possible with that setup. but switches can't output 240p or 480i, so that might be a problem.

I read this book a long time ago. I remember a claim that Nintendo came up with the idea of skipping lines in the video signal (what essentially became typical 240p) in order to get higher framerates, and they called it "double strike."

Can anyone confirm this or have any resources/history on this? Most search results are for a video game that has the same name. JunkerHQ mentions that "double strike" comes up in nintendo's SDK documentation, but the link to it is dead.

It's a TVLines thing
Bigger TVs usually have higher TVLines which means you get memelines for 240p content

Conversely NES games with their small undetailed sprites will look worse while games with bigger sprites like many Arcade/Neo Geo games(despite also being 240p) will be affected less by the memelines, so it also depends on the game

Couldn't disagree more. The 27s42 is going to be as good as it gets when it comes to curved Sony sets. They're recent enough to have good geometry--provided of course it was treated well/has lowish hours. S-video will absolutely pop from a Gamecube on this TV and will be sharp as hell if you've got a quality cable (try to get an official Nintendo one). If you run into a use case where you have to have component, it's one of the most commonly modded sets for both RGB and component.

ParaLLEl-RDP. It has a neat feature where you can upscale the internal resolution, then scale it back down. It gives you high quality models and better preserves detail than rendering at the game's native resolution. Scaling everything back down also preserves the original quality of the textures. Here's a comparison between Angrylion and ParaLLEl. As far as I can tell, Angrylion is very accurate to how a real N64 looks. I don't know much about these kinds of games, but Dirge of Cerberus makes a strong case when demonstrating the picture clarity older televisions can achieve. For whatever reason, this game looks marvelous on my old crt, namely the sharpness of the picture and the contrast being highlights. The opening, pre-rendered movie is displayed in widescreen, with all other cinematics, pre-rendered or not, seemingly being exclusively 4:3. The game looks so good I'm tempted to play through this entire thing, in spite of having no idea who any of these characters are or what the gameplay is trying to achieve. A friendly tip I wanted to give everyone here, it is nearly always worth touching up the focus in your set, be it monitor or TV.
Focus can drift overtime and by recalibrating it you can get much better sharpness out of a tube.

I brought a monitor with mediocre focus back to being factory sharp just by properly adjusting the focus pots

i couldnt find a better thread and didnt want to make a new one just for a dumb little question.
i still have an original SNES powersupply, but it gets pretty warm just by plugging it in. not even turning the console on, just having it plugged in. and by warm i mean in the neighborhood of 60°C. i have a 3D printed mounting bracket to screw the PSU under my desk, for cable management purposes. the bracket is printed with regular PLA, so it should start to deform at around 60°C.
first, is this normal for original SNES PSUs or is mine defective? PSUs shouldnt get warm when they arent even under load, at least afaik.
second, would getting a cheap modern PSU with the same specification be fine?

Anyone 60+ is going to have a CRT TV somewhere in their house just gathering dust. Be it in a bedroom nobody uses anymore, a basement, or just in the garage. 20-25 years ago they may have bought a large flat screen TV as a status item but they couldn't even give away the old TV and they'll be damned if they're going to move it now.

Hello internet pals, I just received a freebie Trinitron (KV-27V42) from 2000, sitting on a porch for years apparently (covered at least) and the owner was thrilled that anyone would want it.
Geometry is nearly perfect, but I'm having no luck getting universal remote to communicate with it. Thinking the IR sensor on front panel may be dead? I also have a 2004 Trinitron that does work with my universal remotes, was hoping I would get lucky and that code would work on my new acquisition. Can do typical menu functions from the buttons on unit but without the remote, service mode is no go. Just wondering if anyone here has replaced an IR sensor and can offer advice. I don't want to watch a bunch of Hindi potato videos to learn about this, or go to r*ddit, if at all possible.

Tubes are generic luckily, that's probably like a Orion tube or like a cheap Samsung tube and in good condition it'll be a good tv. Basically in any set 14'' to 27'' it'd be incredibly incredibly unlucky to find a tube that was ''bad'' new, in fact cheap shit box crts are less damaged by wear over time, you'll often find Trinitrons in way worse condition with focus, convergence and geometry issues even though trinitrons in good condition mog other tvs with a sharper, better contrast and colours etc.

Shitboxes also avoid retarded crt ''advancement issues'' like that weird scan velocity shit on toshibas, 100hz, digital sharpening, digital chassis fruitiness.

Only thing super wrong with shitbox tvs are some have untinted tubes, which are ass. Tinted tubes look darker and actually are you know viewable in daylight.

So basically yeah that tv as long as its in good condition (as a simple slotmask it probably is) is good.

Somebody help me please
I spent over 100 dollars altogether to get an r9 380, a dvi I to vga adapter, vga to component adapter
All in the hopes I could hook my old PC up to my CRT tv. I was led to believe setup was mostly streamlined, just install crt emudriver, then pick your resolution and make sure you have a compatible app.
I cannot get my crt to output anything besides a fucked signal. I have followed every guide I can find to no avail. I have switched from trying vmmaker to CRU neither giving me anything. I have tried a bunch of different refresh rates to absolutely no avail.

Well this is kind of true, its a lot easier to just get one or two consoles running, vs using groovymame to emulate tons of different systems with different oddball resolutions. You of course have to convert the rgbhv into something your consumer set will accept. But I don't understand the question of if the emulator will use that gpu? Are you running two gpus? Why?

>> No.10100910

>Are you running two gpus? Why?
Yes, I would be putting this in my gaming PC that also has a modern video card. I want the older card to get the proper output but still want it to use the main one since my understanding is that some of these emulators are still resource intensive.

>> No.10100990

>>10100951
Idk about that, do people run two gpus with different drivers at the same time? Something like the OSSC might be better suited for your setup. You can put in and out whatever the hell you want. But you do have to build the thing.

Went out today to try and find a VHS player for my mom and scored this toshiba VHS/DVD thing with HDMI for 50$.

Was pleasantly surprised to find one with HDMI as now I don't need to also find a converter for the living room smart TV but for the time being I got this bad boy hooked into my CRT over component to watch some movies we have laying around. I'm kind of impressed at how crisp a well kept VHS can look when it's playing over not-composite.

Too bad none of these fucking things are rewinded and the fastest thing thing will rewind is x2. Enjoy Bugs Life in reverse.

I actually forgot about doing that, this thing has no remote and the manual I found online sucks (it's more focused on all the DVD editing shit it has going on, that I can't even do) so it was tricky figuring out how to work it. The VCR I had as a kid was just a box that ate VHS tapes and spat out Iron Giant, I didn't need to learn anything else. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize the front panel opens lol

I think I saw the same listing. Is it the one where Aqua Teen is one of the photos on the listing? Looks like it's not outputting grayscale. Seems to have a bit of color. I'd guess it's probably some kind of capacitor failure, or it could be something like the chroma being turned down really low. Seller might nor realize. A cheap PVM is a cheap PVM. Might as well get it because it's not like you're losing much if you can't fix it.
