It's a really good that respects the source material more than people claim

it has some issues but they're really minor. I made a romhack that fixes some of those issues and which changes the scroll point to be roughly 60% into ths creen rather than 80% but I never released it due to a nasty glitch I introduced

yeah but even then you get
>footsoldiers
>mousers
>beebop&rocksteady

What else was there from the source material to use at that point as enemies for a game? Not much, so yeah they made some stuff up.
And then in the sequels they stopped doing that all you get are
>footsoldiers type A
>footsoldiers type B
>footsoldiers type C
>footsoldiers type D
etc

and even some of the enemies they made up like the giant toad feel like they belong.

Then you have
>story that's true to the source material, with each stage having its own cutscenes and its own story arch like it was series of comics or a new episode
Not many licenceced games went through the effort of respecting the story that much
>play as all 4 turtles, each with their different abilities
People take that for granted but no, any licenced shovelware would have just put a single character in there and that would have been it. And even TMNT2 youg et all 4 turtles but they're all the same character, the difference is only cosmectic; so again they went through the extra mile
>driveable turtle van
>bleep
>technodrome
>level themes that fit with the source material

People who claim this game doesn't have anything to do with the source material are retards who can't see farther than the tip of their nose

Manuals tried to explain away glitches, bugs, and technical limitations away as "Oh, we totally intended that" all the time back then. I remember reading that the manual for Adventure for Atari 2600 tried to explain away how stuff flickers if you have too many sprites on screen they can flicker and not register collision as basically too many magical objects in close proximity interfering with each other.

I also remember reading the manual for Super Mario Bros and it tried to explain away how a kicked Koopa shell does not kill off-screen enemies as "Maybe they jump over it when Mario isn't looking"

I am sure there are dozens of other examples I am overlooking.

It's common for people to not like, or simply become frustrated with games, a phenomenon that exists to this very day.
Maybe if you read the fucking thread, or read any of the NES TMNT threads that are regularly posted on this board you'll see the common complaints are
1. The difficulty (especially the dam stage)
2. The strange enemy selection that are seemingly transported from an entirely different universe
3. It's not the arcade game (yes they ported it for the sequel but at the time when you had the ubiquitously popular Turtles' beat em up in every arcade and you compared it to this you could feel nothing but disappointment).

Yeah, that may be true. Meanwhile Raph's sais only stay extended for a brief instant and you have to mash the attack button to make sure that you actually hit the enemies. Total balancing failure.

I wonder why the TMNT creators chose Turtles as the animal for their comic. There's so many other animals. I guess the TMNT turtles look kinda cool compared to other animals, maybe they did some focus testing or something. And turtles have a shell which is kind of like a shield or something for when fighting

Turtles move slowly and ninjas move quickly. It's a contrast.

There were international distributions of the DOS version that corrected this impossible jump, there's a good YouTube video diving into this and swapping the relevant level file, or modifying save data to alter your position in the relevant level.

Because, as the tale goes, the creators were up late one night and one of them drew a sketch of a turtle with nunchucks for a laugh, then looked at it the next morning and decided to do something with it.
