10053053 No.10053053 [Reply] [Original]

Alright, I've never played this and since everyone's currently jacking off over wotc's new furry porn game I figured I'd ask something. I know it's supposed to be a classic, and I am extremely interested in classic dnd, so I want to play games that embody that era. Gonna be starting this, but I noticed the intro says I'm some young adult raised in a monastery or whatever lame repetitive bullshit backstory.
I want to role play as a classic grumpy old man wizard. Is the story of your character, particularly the details about them being le young chosen one, going to get in the way of that? Also, is it possible to disable the EE characters? Any other game recs as well? Any singleplayer games that look or feel like classic pre-Luclin Everquest? Retro CRPG thread

OP here. I'm about 8 months away, as a matter of fact. Could have avoided this fate in high school, but I didn't love the girl I was with at the time and she thought I did, so I didn't want to use her just to say I did it. She hated my guts after we broke up, no girlfriends since then, about 11 years now.
Now I got out of shape, my joints are fucked, and have been fighting panic disorder without medication for the past 8 years, but I can finally leave the house again without hyperventilating and causing a scene, and I'm currently working on a low poly fantasy action rpg :^)
Any recs for games like classic EQ but singleplayer, now that I've bared my soul to you?

Yes. Baldur's gate is fun and very open in how you approach it in many ways but almost every fiber of it will push against being a grumpy old man wizard. Not least of which is being accosted by an actual grumpy old man wizard early on, and your character being raised by a different grumpy old man wizard.
The rift would be too much for my imagination to reconcile, but good luck.

Just pick a voice line that sounds like an old wizard. You'll be hearing the voice line a lot.

You want to play games that embody that era? The original version is the only choice. The EE is actually just BG 2 running the original campagin except with all of the BG2 classes, kits, changes to spells, worse graphical effects (most of the spells were redrawn for BG2) and worse sound.
The original campagin was designed for and balanced around the original engine and its spells/classes etc. The BG2 stuff really tramples over a lot of that.
Not to mention the absolutely not of-that-era additions to the game that you will have to endure that differ in style and intent so sharply that you'll think your LCD monitor has a huve crack in it like its made of glass.
Whatever, though, if you care, you care. If you don't, play the EE but know that you are not actually playing the game that changed roleplaying.

It doesn't let me roleplay as this very common character archetype I want to be that's been present in DnD since the start of it, according to other posters. What's the point in calling it a roleplaying game when you can't play a different role than young chosen one with mysterious origins taken in by an old master? It's the same damn story as every major fantasy series. I'd be fine with it if some party member was the chosen one and the PC you make is whoever the fuck you want it to be. I'm old and jaded and my chances at heroism are behind me, and while I can relate to characters that are unlike me, I am fatigued by the extreme prevalence of these tropes and don't want to play a game where I have to slog through it again beat for beat. I don't mean to bash the game, I've never played it and I know it has an extremely positive reputation, I'm just saying it's so close yet so far from what I'm looking to play.

Stop being retarded. You can roleplay whatever you want but the story assumes that you're a somewhat young ward due to your character's birth being important for plot reasons. Part of roleplaying is playing multiple roles and not just one that you slot into every situation

>> No.10053310

>>10053294
>part of roleplaying is letting someone else roleplay for you
>you are a teenage chosen one left on the doorstep of a jedi kni- I mean some old man, your origins are mysterious and definitely not going to end in some extremely mundane and predictable plot twist in the third act of the story
>uhh okay, I am just going to ignore that for awhile cuz that's part of roleplaying. I'm a cranky old wizard who gets into trouble all the time
5 minutes later, bandits accost me on the road
>who let this child out of his crib?
>isn't it past your bedtime? how about i relieve you of all your gold, kid
10 minutes later
>it turns out the evil king is your FATHER!!
>it is said a youth will take up the blade of evil's bane and strike down the bad man. you are that boy!
>but i'm an old wizard, though
>too bad, that's not the story i'm trying to tell, reee
I'M the retarded one? It's like a game where the DM forces you to play his characters only and you're just there to mechanically proceed as he directs you to.

Why not find a game that leans in to what you want?
Forwhat its work, in AD&D all characters would stary in thier youth. The crusty wizards you might have heard about being played back then got to be crusty wizards after being played for a long time through many adventures.

That's apparently what I'll probably do, I'm just looking for recs now of stuff like that. Got any? And what you said about ADnD, I'd be cool with that too in game form. Just want something other than standard jrpg teenager saves world bullshit.

Master of Magic for being a crusty wizard. Ok, it's not about adventuring, but if you want the role of being an enigmatic wizard ruminating over ancient lore in his tower, you can't go wrong.

Also, I'd reccomend Daggerfall (Daggerfall Unity) for a game where you can say nay to its plot and its actually ready to support you with many hours of adventure regardless comlete with the ability to become an incredible wizard.
Also, it may not be a D&D game but its highly influenced by the D&D of its day. Strongly flavoured.

The only classic style RPGs I know that truly let you roleplay any class/age/race character are all from the 8 to 16-bit era. Think old SSI games for example

Clearly, yes. It's a narrative heavy video game. Expecting to be able to play any archetype of character you want is retarded of you

I feel like video games as escapism isn't the move at your age - I'm slightly older and have been single since 2017 after two failed engagements a few years apart each. Life does not fix itself man, I coasted too long not putting in the work and it has cost me a lot. We never get younger. I want you to be succesful because you seem like a moral person. I recommend pursuing your own success first and foremost, don't escape into fantasy as alluring as it is, I should know, I lived in Morrowind to get away. Much love anon, I wish the best. By the way, for panic attacks, take literally 3 sips of a normal beer and it should severely dampen it, weird trick but there's some science behind it. I also recommend Christianity, at least try it, go visit some churches, that's where a lot of the good women are.

Man I feel like I’m you minus the obesity and pathological desire to be a woman. I really need to get my shit together. I think my joints may be actually permanently fucked, though.

Thanks for the tips. I assure you, I don't really play that many video games, and I'm currently spending most of my waking hours learning Blender, Zbrush, Photoshop, and Unreal so I can do remote freelance work on video games and slowly develop my own. It's coming along nicely, and I'm actually pretty happy.
The love train has sailed, I think, since my joints are fucked and I can't get back into shape (used to be noticeably muscly, it was the only time I ever got female attention. women are shallower than men it turns out), which used to cause me anguish but that now I just don't care. Anxiety has lessened quite a bit recently, and while Christianity is beautiful and I suppose I practice it alone in a sense, a church setting does not appeal very much to me -- no offense meant. I do not believe it will give me peace of mind, nor will it give me a good wife. My plan is basically to just work from home as much as possible for the rest of my life and get enough money to make something truly my own along the way. I'm not cut out for most of the normal healthy things I used to hope to do.
