10050380 No.10050380 [Reply] [Original]

I lived in Sacramento in the 1980s and I used to go to a laundromat with my mom before we got a working laundry machine. This took place back in 1983 and I remember when I started going there through the year of 1983 there was a game called Space Defender It was one of those vector games like Asteroids. It had a rectangular playing area along with had you were a triangle or square and you had to shoot spaceships and UFO's. If those things passed you well you died. It was a easy game till level 6 when it got fucking hard like hard of all fucking. For some reason I remember it had a joystick with a red top and one button for shooting and two for the one and two players. It also had a high score which allowed you to put your name in. But for some reason when me and my mom went to the laundromat in late January the game was one. I've never found anything about the game, and I did a little research and found nothing at all about it like it never existed. If any of you guys know something, then that would help with me trying to find this piece of shit. I literally have no information about it and has no evidence online at all.
Anyways hope someone can help.

>> No.10050394

It may have been a bootleg of a different vector game. Unfortunately the MAME online database is down at the moment.

Possibilities are
A. You're misremmebering some other game
B. It was a game with very limited distribution and was unsuccessful, so the cabs and boards were largely repurposed for other games
C. Similar to above, that it was a game on location test and was unsuccessful, so it was never mass produced (this is unlikely given the location - a random laundromat probably wouldn't be the most useful location test spot unless it were a huge laundromat with a popular arcade)

Arcade owners have repurposed cabinets since forever. If a game was underperforming they would swap in another game in that cabinet, often a bootleg which were sold as kits.
Never rely on what the cabinet looked like when trying to identify a game, especially if you are looking at that arcade museum site for reference.

>> No.10056319

This. Half the game listings on the site use pics of conversions instead of the dedicated cabinets anyway, so even if one you've seen in the wild was dedicate it won't look like the pictures there half the time.

Also note some vector games came in black and white AND color variants, and bootlegs sometimes used black and white monitors for games that normally used color (or had an overlay--which could also be missing from one and making it appear to be black and white).

Source: been collecting/repairing/trading these pieces of shit for over 15 years. Never run across a game called "Space Defender" but I'm asking some friends who own games there's no trace of existing and such to see if they've ever heard of it.

And the poster on that topic, as well as the one after that agreeing with them in that link, both write identically to you including several idiosyncrasies I've only seen in your posts. Amazing how everybody remembers exactly the exact month it disappeared in, too, 40 years after the fact. Also the OP of that post is literally "Somekidsonline." Come on man.

It's just a coincidence since stuff like that happens every now and then. Also you can't truly know it was me do to the anonymous being of 4chan and also it could be a coincidence that the two accounts have similar idiosyncrasies. >Obviously getting the front profile in useless, and I'm sure the OP knows this.

If what you said was "Could you do me a favor and draw the what the cabinet looked like?" from above, then why would OP think you were wanting to see the side profile? I've been buried in video games for thirty years and I would have answered that question with a drawing of the front just like OP did. That's where the game screen and controls are so obviously it's what's most important right? And both front and side would have art and title information (if such existed) on them. So I don't know why you'd expect OP to think the front would be useless.

So it was a Japanese game? How was this operator's manual bound together?

This definitely comes across as an elaborate hoax, but I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt because there's a lot of poorly documented things out there in the world of old videogames.
>>10061943
I vaguely recalled seeing your name on here in the past and stumbled across your channel the other day - many thanks for preserving all that stuff. Trying to repair 40+ year old arcade PCBs is well beyond my knowledge and patience level, awesome to see somebody who puts forth the effort.

>> No.10066234

i remember this game too, op. same time period and region roughly, though i don't want to dox myself. prove to me you aren't pretending--if you really made it to level 6, what was the boss at the end of level 5? I only got to level 6 once so i'll never forget that son of a bitch. he ate more quarters than any other boss in any other game i can think of back then, but maybe i just sucked at it since you said it was pretty easy (i was quite young so probably)

Yeah that manual is a little odd. Looks legit but I see where you're coming from. The Japanese and the schematic is definitely not from anything Simutrek, so maybe that's a mistake from the poster, or it's a elaborate shitpost. If it was a shitpost then damn, that's effort.

Most likely explanation is the OP printed out the "manuals" days ago. Then he spent days keeping the thread alive trying to get people invested in finding out what it was, before finally posting the fakes.

Because there are so many unknowns with older arcade games, these kinds of hoaxes are easy to fabricate. Polybius got started in a similar way, where the owner of an arcade website made a fake page for it that included stuff like fake extracted text strings. It's best to remember how easy these things are to fake and not let them escalate into "A Day With Spongebob" type nonsense.

The Game was a Vector Graphic based video game where the playing area was a rectangle with lines across the playing area. The you played as a low poly Triangle that had to shoot generic looking spaceships and UFO's along with fellow triangles and if you let one of them get past you than you would lose a life. The game had a lead board that let you put in your name with three letters and the game got really hard after level 6 and I don't know what happened after level 10.

It says very little about what the game actually was. The Akah Arrh shit was from someone who really wanted it to have a more plausible explanation than "a bunch of people fell for a shitpost".

>> No.10067595

The nitty gritty history of a lot of games is so unknown that actual things can seem fake, and moderate effort hoaxes can come across as no less plausible than genuine articles. Like that rough English translation prototype of Starfy with cursing appeared to be a fake just based on the absurdity of it all, until more of it was shown and that Nintendo Treehouse interview was found which mentioned a "roughly translated Starfy proto where a character says 'shit'," and now it looks like most agree that it was legit.

When the manual was first brough up before the photos were shown I know acknowledged the manual so I didn't just ignore it since I pointed out we could find it since we have the manual for it. I still think this could be our best shot to find it. I've seen the photos and the one showing gameplay is very similar to what I described.

I mean, we've got an interview with a Simutrek programmer who says the company didn't have anything even close to releasing besides Cube Quest. Yeah, he COULD be misremembering, but between that and the oddities in the schematics, it's pretty safe to write off as fake unless more information comes to light.

>> No.10067764

That post had a lot of other manuals in it and that's what throws me. Rock n Rope, Dig Dug, Tempest, a good amount of Atari stuff it seems. Also a Japanese Invaders instruction card and a G05 monitor manual, and a ton more. That's an impressive hoard of manuals, if anything.

OP also seems to be avoiding those manual posts, which really throws me off, because I'm starting to think the OP is a big troll and also posted the manual pics because I don't know he's bored or something.

Look I'm gonna be totally honest, if I was asking around on any imageboard or forum or whatever and someone posted a pic of a manual like that, I'd be going apeshit thinking obviously that the mystery had been solved. The fact he's completely avoiding them as if they don't exist indicates clearly to me that either OP's bullshiting, or OP and manual poster are the same person.

Sounds like Beamrider for Atari 2600. But I can't find any mention of it getting an arcade port. Maybe a bootleg setup. Was very common back in the day to just take console games and hack in a credit system and put them in a cabinet for the poor people that couldn't afford a home system.

I have no idea, but it's definitely a strange thread and seeming more like coordinated BS. The OP seemingly ignores the operator manual, then insists that he isn't ignoring it, but is still ultimately just ignoring it. The manual poster gives very little info about where he got it (despite seeming to have a handful of legit manuals), and while convincing, there's definitely inconsistencies with it (doesn't look old enough, unclear binding, etc).
My guess is it's some sort of elaborate hoax or a promotion for an indie game of some sort.
