What console libraries would you consider shovelware?

Pic related, without a doubt. If it's not trite and overplayed cookie cutter Nintendo IP's, then it's RPG Maker JRPG's, or horse racing simulators.

This is mostly true. There are maybe a dozen or so exclusive gems on the console. Most of them being Nintendo games.

The ones that were good were phenomenal. and the console sold well. But everything that wasn't the best was really just mediocre at best.

Even though the Wii U was a disaster of a release, it had much better software and allowed them to ultimately get the Switch out. Especially Splatoon since it became an insanely massive hit out of nowhere.

The problem with the Wii is they still keep trying to use that same design ideology and it's going to hurt them again. Especially with their inability to let go of successful legacy titles, unwillingness to support current successful titles, and completely lackluster efforts on newer releases. Thats not even getting into the shitty hardware.

I don't agree 100% with this but I will say N64 and Saturn both share the same problem, not many games outside of first-party games, in N64's case you get Midway and Rare games, in Saturn's case you get Capcom games. Both much weaker libraries than their predecessors, especially if you include SEGA CD and 32X titles for Genesis. PS1 is the only one that had a truly stellar lineup throughout. At least Dreamcast and GBA were better

>> No.10052481

>>10047601

SNES and PlayStation both have very good libraries from their respective generations but also received the most amount of shovelware. If it wasn't games capitalizing on a trend, it was copy paste garbage.

>Super Famicom had a shit ton of pachinkos, card games, idk just name whatever
>PS1 Japanese market was also filled with the same but also copy cat games

What I still find fascinating is that the Japanese rehash-fest was interesting because the core gameplay stuck to being practical despite not having anything to make it stand out. Even the budget garbage that would come to PS1 in all regions had some charm to it because the tools were very primitive and expensive so some amount of effort had to go into it.

>> No.10052491

>>10047707
one may make the argument that less is more, but N64 had far less games that you WANTED to buy and not just buy because it's the only console you own. Nintendo really stunted the potential of the N64 with their overburdening rules.

>> No.10052506

>>10052491
Oh definitely. Despite having a decent first-party lineup, it had no where near as many great titles as the SNES.
