The violent screams and brutal crushing noises when you ran over enemies with the tank in Goldeneye. I had played Quake 2 by the time I got to that game, and that one is much more visceral and visually gory, but the Strogg convey virtually no humanity, unlike the human soldiers in GE64, who respond in very audible and human sounding terror when crushed. Someone who comes to sudden agony and is terrified of the grisly fate they're suffering, that really shook me as a kid, so even though I really enjoyed the power and speed of the tank, often I would avoid running enemies over because it felt too extreme for me, I couldn't bear doing it.

On the streets of St. Petersburg though, speed is critical and resistance is much tougher, so I found that blowing through barricades rapidly, basically not stopping to fight and just evading and charging through as much as possible, was my only viable strategy, and I didn't particularly like it, but I made peace with the fact that my hand was forced.
I could be a bit cruel at times though, like a boss or other high tier enemy causing me lots of grief, if they entered one of those long and drawn out death animations, I'd sometimes keep shooting at them for as long as they kept writhing in agony, just out of rage, just because fuck HIM.

Quake 2's POWs who kept wailing in insanity were disturbing in their own way, but you weren't supposed to shoot those.

Abstraction I guess? I mean look at the wacky as fuck perspective and partial (!) lens distortion. The scale with the lamp posts, as well as the fact that the city is just a couple few skyscrapers standing in a huge and otherwise empty grassy field, with seemingly a single road leading towards it, that's also all really weird if you actually think about it.

I love Adrian Carmack's art, and the coloring and shading here is still lovely (the way the stark yellow flames cast light on the thick brown plume of smoke emanating from it here is gorgeous), but the composition for this image was very quick and dirty. Perhaps it was a late development thing, and there was little time, but there's a couple of rough shortcuts here and there to Doom and Doom 2 as a whole if you pay attention to the art assets in detail (like paging through the frames with an editor like Slade).

Not quite a game, but I remember going on Newgrounds as a kid and stumbling upon one particular interactive Flash animation. It was based on the cartoon Powerpuff Girls. You kidnapped one of the Powerpuffs, took her to your home, shaved her hair, cut off her limbs, gouged out her eyes, then you let her fly around randomly in agony for a while, before finally mercy-killing her. pretty fucking messed up, and in retrospect I don't know if it was just made by a kid trying extra hard to be edgy, or someone with a sadism/guro fetish

Yeah even on SNES, actually maybe especially on SNES, this shit could get creepy. It also had so many glitches that I would constantly find that freaked me out as a kid even though they'd seem tame now.

No they're not. They were created by scanning a GI Joe action figure. It being a GI Joe is also referenced in the multigen.txt file.

It was my first encounter with the fact some games out there actually try to be scary. A harsh but necessary lesson I learned from until I played Aliens vs Predator and encountered my first facehugger when I was 8.

Not heard of this, interesting Youtube rabbit hole - it's so strange to see the art and animation style that I recognise from Commander Keen and Rescue Rover being used to show zombies being blasted into chunks.

Speaking of which, picrel made me jump as a kid - particularly with the ear splitting computer speaker noise accompanying any death in Rescue Rover.
