What are some games that have momentum based gameplay, preferably other than Sonic and Mario.

It's like Mario, but with actual challenge, better powerups, better physics, more interesting level designs, and more content.

Pretty much any 2D platformer from the 80s and the 90s. Platformers don't having momentum is a relatively recent thing and it always throw me off because I'm used to compensating for it.

I don't think momentum plays that big of a role in Mega Man or Castlevania, at least for take off because you can slow yourself in the air but it's more about where you jump from and of you're moving or not. In those games your momentum doesn't carry you on the ground to any amount that matters(aside from ice stages). Momentum is integral to Sonic games because you need to build it up before you can run and most Mario games have a deciated run button. If you let go of the controller while running in those games you'll keep running. Those other games it just matters that you're moving at all with no variance whereas in Sonic or Mario you have variable amounts of speed that greatly affect your jump.

The one with some of the most extreme momentum movement is Psycho Fox on the SMS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msODWDfoPl8

Your guy starts really slow when you hold a direction and builds up a lot of speed the longer you hold it. It's actually a pretty good game for the time. The stages are huge and take a while to explore and you can change between several characters like a fox and a tiger and a hippo with different abilities. The hardest part of the game really is the actual momentum in the movement though it takes a while to get used to

Jazz Jackrabbit?
I would honestly suggest looking up some of the conversion romhacks for the mario games. They in fact do change the physics and some of them do it very well.

I tried this for the first time recently. I thought I had the wrong game at first. It felt like a bootleg game. Complete nostalgia goggle garbage.

Joust, Balloon Fight, Lunar Lander, Solar Jetman
I wish more games were like this, where there's an actual connection between what you press, how you press it and what happens on screen. like with Joust, the rapid pressing of the button mimics the flap of the wings
also like in Jump King and how you have to hold down jump to determine how high you'll go, instead of just pressing jump and immediately jumping like in every other platformer

I love the momentum based jumping in Smash 64 and Melee and its removal in Brawl onwards is by far the worst change made to the series for me. I don't get why Sakurai did it, considering his attention to detail in game design. It's not like it's a competitive or difficult mechanic, it's just a basic for any good platforming game. Maybe it was hard to balance around, or maybe it was just another casualization change.
