Is Analogue really successful? They get a lot of attention from youtubers and press, but their products are expensive as shit and constantly out of stock. How are they still around?

Also, they do a lot of typical big tech company shit like warranty stickers and proprietary components - it seems like they're trying to sell consumer crap as an "enthusiast" device for "preserving" games.

>typical big tech company shit like proprietary components
So much this. Why didn’t they just use off the shelf components so we could have had a cheaper and completely pointless device that’s inferior in most
conceivable ways?

>> No.10038219

>>10038207
Not proprietary as in they made it, proprietary as in undocumented and no one can do anything with it. Like the DAC.

>> No.10038226

>>10038207
Analogue can still open source their components ESPECIALLY because they use FPGA technology, anon, that is what projects like the Mister and the OSSC do despite the former costing more than the Pocket.

They also specifically decided to not open source their DAC used for their devices and had people waiting for several months to be able to use the Analogue Pocket on a CRT despite that being a promised feature for the thing from day one.

You answered your own question.
They market to richfags who impulse buy these things.
They probably end up in a drawer gathering dust.

Maybe like 5% of their customers care about making homebrew work on a device made for original cartridges is the reality of it. Most people who bought one simply wanted to best way to play their carts (minus the vertical form factor) and they seem to have got it.

>> No.10038270

>>10038235
I feel they're targeting consoomers who hate emulation but like having something "premium" in their hands even though a random tablet from China probably does a better job at emulating than the Pocket despite it having FPGA.

>>10038237
they were constantly promoting how useful of a tool it is to homebrew developers and composers despite using its own version of GB Studio that isn't natively compatible with other versions.

>> No.10038295

>>10038270
Seriously, who cares? They obviously shouldn’t advertise a poorly supported feature until it’s done, but who is using the pocket, a device that specializes in playing carts, for composition and homebrew? I’m a composer, and the thought of using the pocket’s hardware for that is absurd to me. And again, maybe 5% of people care about homebrew games on a device like this. The question OP raised is: How is this company so successful? It’s because they succeeded in delivering upon the core promise of their product.

The collector market is very fascinated with FPGA technology. They also get a LOT of support from YouTubers and reviewers. Pretty much Analogue is currently somewhere near the top of the pyramid (which is exactly what it is) alongside infamous characters such as MetalJesusRocks and Pat the NES Punk. Of course none of this actually has anything to do with video games and only exists as an artificial way to drive up the already inflated retro games market, as seen in >>10038591. We've seen this happen in many other industries before, it's just that with video games it's been a little more subtle. I still feel kind of bad for kids who spend outrageous amounts of money just to own some of this stuff.

The Pocket is amazing. It runs my carts perfectly. I bought 2 of them, gave 1 to my Dad.

I find it absurd that this thing is held to a different level of scrutiny as the Chinkshit devices. People have been waiting on them for a year. The manufacturer can't meet demand and people think it makes sense for them to hire shills who post here. It is undoubtably poorfag seethe.
