For Sonic's birthday I got drunk and replayed this. It is absolutely the #1 Sonic game hands down. From start to finish, every single level is flawless...the design, the music, the boss fights, and each level has a unique quality that is unmatched as a whole by any other of the OG Sonic games. It tells a story with emotion, without even a single word spoken. Rivalry, betrayal, redemption, forgiveness, and triumph. The most epic final boss fight in any of the 2D games. That moment when you see the Death Egg buried in the ceiling of the lava reef cave. The Hidden Palace and its magnificence. Sky Sanctuary zone leading to Death Egg zone is absolute kino. I literally wept at how beautiful it was.

Other games that come close:
>Sonic 2, tells a story and has amazing levels and game flow, but the team was not ready for maximum realization of the Sonic vision at the time
>Sonic 3, but it is tarnished by carnival night zone and overall the levels are not as magnificent

This is correct. Sonic & Knuckles by itself is probably the best Sonic on the genesis. I can't stand Sonic 3 by itself or latched on to S&K. Sonic 3's levels are weaker. The atmosphere in Sonic and Knuckles is just something else. Also, the minor boss music track is amazing.

I did an Amy run in the new Origins Plus release of this
are you a) supposed to retain your shield on successive tries of the Giant Eggman Robo in the original release and b) is the lightning shield supposed to make you immune to the master emerald death laser? I tried looking this up and it is not mentioned anywhere but that's how it went down in that playthrough, felt odd to me

Based OP. I only had Sonic 3 as a kid, so they will always be two separate games in my mind. When I finally got to play S&K years later it felt surreal, like I'd found a missing piece of my childhood...I have a special fondness for Mushroom Hill and its music because of that moment.

I got to play S&K from a blue windows CD that my mom bought me in a Sam's club. Still the best sonic game. Mushroom Hill zone is a really fun change up from all the other Green hills and palm beaches. Flying battery zone's theme is still wild. When I got there I was like "How is something this badass just level 2?!"

You know, I got a few good games from Sam's club. I also got Abe's Odyssey there.

It's literally the same game divided in two halves. Second just feels more climactic, like anything that happens in Sonic 3 was a prelude to that.

Sandopolis Act 2 is not a good, the boss of Sanpolis Act 1 is bad.

I've never beaten Sonic 3, but does it just stop? Like no ending? Because I've heard it's just half of S&K.

You can see the Sonic 3 endings at the start. You basically just start falling on the platform and watch the Death Egg falling, then jump in the air. A lot simpler than Sonic 2's ending.

I was able to get S&K new for $20 shortly after it came out at my local Sam's Club. Me and my brother had to beg my parents to get it and they relented after we told them we would pay them somehow. Can't remember if we ever did or not kek

Feel the same way. Although I will admit it is the weakest zone I still like Sandopolis Zone quite a bit. Sonic 3 has Angel Island and Ice Cap Zone. Everything else is OK to meh at best.

too bad they released them separately so that 3 had an entirely different feel to it not only in tone but in soundtrack quality. yeah you could use lock on tech but most people already beat the sonic 3 standalone before sonic and knuckles came out. playing standalone sonic 3 before the second half came out felt really disappointing.

I honestly can't play just Sonic 3 or Sonic & Knuckles, you ether have to play them together or not at all

>> No.10037872

The intention was that they would be the same game, but that was not the reality unfortunately. S&K itself could really benefit from Angel Island zone and the legendary Hydrocity zone, and even Ice Cap zone. I feel like if they could be re-combined and rip out carnival night zone, and maybe launch base, it could be a perfect realization.

>Sandopolis Act 2
I think it's fine and kind of a nice horror spin on the series. The act 1 boss is definitely weird and not that interesting once you figure out the mechanic, but it's still a pretty unique fight.

>I think it's fine and kind of a nice horror spin on the series
If you want true horror, play Labyrinth Zone in Sonic 1. The ghosts in Sandopolis are barely a factor (has anyone ever been actually hurt by these, ever?). It's just a mess of a level design that borders on western nonsense, and the constant door switch mechanic coupled with waiting for the sand to fill rooms is just sloppy.
>but it's still a pretty unique fight.
bro you just wait until he sloooooowly jumps his way to the pit and let him fall.
>mechanic
?
I love S&K, but Sandpolis Act 2 sucks and Act 1 is just bad. Sandopolis Act 1 is a good level, thoever

I played it before 3 and for a kid it was definitely more epic than 1 and 2, but it also felt darker.
The second zone is a flying fortress, sandopolis was unsettling, only sky sanctuary had a clear blue sky but I was too busy to not fall down.
3 is needed in my opinion, even marble garden and carnival night feel less threating and more open than most zones in S&K, giving you time to get comfortable with the game.
