The Chromecast is pretty good as a retrogaming device.

Worse than a used office SSFPC off eBay.

It's not a good device for any purpose. Just use an HDMI cord from your laptop if you need to watch jewflix or tranime. I can't fathom wanting to play games on that piece of shit even your phone is a better option

I use it mostly with retroarch and it runs fine up to PSP, some consoles like PS1 or Dreamcast are better using the stand-alone versions of Duckstation and Flycast respectively (couldn't get redream to work because Google fucked up the file browser on their latest OS).

Yep, waste time stripping down something designed to spy on boomers instead of just buying a mini PC and installing Retropi or Bacetra on it.

honestly its kinda annoying because A12 doesnt let you browse the data folders and these devices have issues with external storage.

How is it for Saturn games? Also how well does it handle external storage drives, I have a drive that works on my cheap Walmart stick but not my Fire TV 4K Max. Pic related is my currecnt favorite for all of the 16- and 32-bit stuff besides Saturn

>> No.10022624

>>10022587
Haven't tried Saturn.
For storage I got an USB-C hub and both my USB drive and SD card work fine, just dont format whatever you're gonna use as extra storage for the device.

wtf I've owned one for years and its borderline useless for emulation. Stop fucking lying op.

>> No.10022727

>>10022707
If you owned one for years you would have the old model and it would indeed be useless then right? Having said that I would want to see how well the new one works, I'm very skeptical.

>>10022707
mine works fine
>>10022727
I mostly use retroarch with it and will say, if you want the accuracy emulators like mesen, bsnes or mgba then its not gonna run them, but the basic ones like snes9x, fceumm, picodrive, gpSP and the like work very well, you can even use basic shaders or runahead if you like.
Stand-alone Duckstation, Flycast and PPSSPP work well too, I'm gonna try Saturn when I can.

Nice, thanks bro. Just bought a house and I'm contemplating how my setup will be to play retro games. I do have a Steam Deck and a dock too. I got the seller to leave behind his next level audio system too so I'm just over the moon.

Tested saturn cores on retroarch and only yabasanshiro was running games at average performance (tried sega rally and marvel vs street fighter).
Stand-alone Yabasanshiro runs waaaaay better and I got to play Sega Rally Championship, Sonic Wings Special and Ninja Penguin Manmaru without issues, only downside is lack of a menu hotkey.

These things got nerfed hard. I got the new Onn box and the 4k Chromecast last week and the Android 12 TV OS has no internal file manager. No downloaded apps can access files. Emulators are broken. No frontends work. "You don't have an app that can do this."

In some of the videos they show emulators working but not the setup so I'm suspecting they're older models before Google fucked everything up with these "updates"

Yeah the biggest issue is android 12's retarded restrictions and google fucking up the file browsing on android tv (this isn't just a chromecast thing, every smart tv that has android tv integrated suffers from this).
Installing nightly retroarch (the one from playstore is outdated as hell) helps this device a lot with emulation.

I got it to work with the apks from this youtube video: 32-bit retroarch and an old version of ppsspp. I also paid attention when he stopped at the version number of his mupen N64 emulator and found out it was an old version from 2018 that still has the legacy file pickers for Android 9 and below. Got that too. Also found out that only FAT32 is supported now for USB sticks, no exFAT or NTFS. Can't believe I have to do all this shit to run emulators for freaking Android

>> No.10029010

>>10028607
an older version of redream also works better for android tv, but I couldn't get it to access the external storage.

>all this Android 12 fuckery

So does this affect all of these devices then? Is there a better option for a portable TV emulation device?

>> No.10030603

>>10030515
I usually see sticks and tv boxes with tons of emulators on facebook and other shopping apps but no idea if they're good or not.
I agree that this whole A12 File Browsing is annoying but I'm fine with what my chromecast can do so far in regards to emulation.

>>10030603
They're pretty bad out of the box, full of roms and emulators that don't work or are in chinese. Decent if you're getting them for the hardware and setting it up yourself. You'll also get those cheap $5 fake ps2 controllers bundled in
