Not that similar, MS is more focused on shooting than on platforming, while Contra is balanced between the platforming and the shooting.

I agree that routing games is fun, but they are a bit too simplistic and static. The overly harsh health/lives system of the western release also makes it very repetitive and front-heavy to try to figure out the routing. Metal Slug games are a lot more deep and fun to route and have a lot more dynamic elements so the entire game isn't just completely trivialized by simple strategies.

Not him, but I have no-miss clears for Contra and Super Contra (both NES and AC) and they are great games. Contra 3 has those shitty top-down stages, and Hard Corps is a great game but it is pure memo with zero dynamic elements or execution difficulty, so it's extremely trivial once you know the strats. Hard Corps also has very little platforming or interesting stages, as it's basically a boss rush.

Complete opposite. Contra is shallow and quickly mastered. An ugly and brutish game. Metal Slug is extremely deep and infinitely replayable with some of the best spritework, animations, and music in the industry.

I am a fan of Contra, Super Contra (NES versions) and Alien Wars. Hard Corps has great replayability. Stattered Soldier and Neo Contra are also cool.
Metal Slug I dunno. I adore the first one and even have a mint MVS kit in my collection because it's a masterpiece from the visual and sound standpoint. Controls wise it feels less snappy and pleasant than Contra games but is still fun to play through once in a while.
Other Metal Slug games are just rehashes with increasingly worse aesthetics and gameplay. In MS1 you move from one cool setpiece to another while MS3 barely feels like an arcade game with its long and boring levels. So it's only MS1 for me.
