Mitsume ga tooru is such an underrated gem. It plays similar to Rockman but you have one weapon that you can upgrade through the shop. You lose upgrades when you die but it's not a big deal, the game never feels unfair.
It's based on an old anime from the same guy who made Atom. I'm having so much fun with the game that I'll probably check out the anime too.

Ah, the great filter of this game, decides if you'll pass on it or stay to the end.
Me and my friend got stuck on for entire evening as kids.

Hold B to summon Red Condor spear, then jump on it and use as a spring/platform

I knew about this one because I'm Russian and we had a lot of JP only games on bootleg carts. This one was called "3 Eyes". Same reason we know about Battle City, Kyatto Ninden Teyandee, etc.

Yeah it's a great fucking game, I love it, easily in my top 20 NES games.

Natsume's peak NES alongside Shatterhand and Shadow of the Ninja.
Also the game has a great debug menu

I did and that's exactly what happens in first episodes.

Like, in episode 2 he was trying to turn school bullies into a noodle and built a dedicated machine for it.

I think they do this for 10-15 episodes but then a bigger story arc begins and I haven't watched them, so maybe it gets better

I'm glad I bought a chink bootleg console because 99% of the times they have this game as well. I couldn't have discovered it otherwise. I agree it's a very well made game, even impressive considering the hardware (the NES, not the chinese knockoff)
