So I decided to try to 1cc this and I noticed that there is no way to earn extra lives in it. Thats 3 hits for the entire game? That seems a little harsh even by arcade standards.

Contra let you earn extra lives from points, most shmups have bombs that erease enemy projectiles (essentially acting as an extra life if you are skilled enough), beat em ups occasional had healing items.

Just 3 lives to go through all 6 missions?

I can make it to mission 5 boss without dying.

Yea, the Metal Slug games don't have extends.

The first MS is pretty easy to 1CC, though. The last stage is obviously the hardest part (particularly the bridge area), but as long as you don't play it like Contra where you rush through everything and just take your time at each screen clearing out enemies, you should be able to clear it.

I occasionally take MSX and try to 1cc it.I usually get to level 4 and get stuck on the aliens part.

Today I was fooling on ms1 and its hella easier. I got to the third level and I thing I could get further if the joystick wasn't so crap as the diagonals were hard to get.

forgot to say, its true that you have 3 life's but most of the levels have an slug or other weapon.Abuse the hell out of the invisibility after entering/getting out an slug and you should be fine.

3 lives is a tight limit, yeah, but I think that speaks more to Metal Slug's fairness. Despite that, it has a reputation for being among the easier 1CCs. (It's all relative, of course, but compared to the other Metal Slugs or most popular arcade games).

This, and use up all your grenades when fighting bosses(even if you're in the slug) since their number resets to 10 at the start of a new mission anyway. Makes the first five missions a breeze.

So... you've never played contra apparently. While you can't 'clear' out all enemies, rushing through contra is not the best way to get through it at all. There's no time limit except on the arcade version for the inside base runs and it's fairly generous anyway.

You can add more lives in the options menu.

rushing is practically required for the first 2 games on the arcade version. Enemies spawn infinitly at a very fast rate and you need to clear them out while advancing and dealing with the more difficult, non infinite enemies.

Th nes version the enemies spawn slow enough so you arn't forced to rush. Contra 3 and above focus more on boss fights than enemise

Rushing isn't required at all. You want to clear out any stationary targets and anyone on screen to reduce overall bullet spray. It's far easier when you don't rush period. There's no reason to at all. Infinite respawning enemies > infinite respawning enemies + 10 guys on your screen shooting bullets every which way.
The NES version is the version you want to take it even easier on as there are so many more of them and it's far harder to dodge them.

Metal Slug 1 is a pretty easy game to 1cc once you've played through it a few times. Hell, even my non-gamer sister was able to 1cc it after two weeks of practice. ᑈ

No need to be condescending. I've beaten every Contra on a credit and can handle them fine.

I'm pretty mediocre at video games and I was able to beat both MS and MS2 with three credits. MS3's final mission is too hard for me, though.

And I can beat the entire thing without getting hit.

You should make the most of the tank if you get it; it has replenishable HP and awesome firepower. Also in the first game it allows you to chug endless stream of grenades when ducking, while the other games limited you to two onscreen bombs max. This makes the 3rd mission boss very easy to kill, just chug out 40 bombs as it comes in the screen. You do miss a few prisoners that way, though.

You forget that getting into a slug essentially gives you 3-6 extra hits, depending if you get a gas pickup.
