Yeah. The graphics are extra garish and there's a bunch of shit everywhere. Best not to take your first time through too seriously.

It's complicated. Whatever you do, do NOT rush to the goal. If you get the bad ending, you didn't even try and you certainly did not beat it. Read a manual on the internet. Then go there and make us proud.

Just play it like a regular Sonic game and you'll be fine. Start with basic any% runs and eventually you can go for all of the Time Stones when you want to give it a shot. You don't need to time travel at all in order to get the good ending. SEGA CD is really a fantastic system, if you like Sonic CD then check out Popful Mail or The Terminator as well. Also you are doing the right thing playing the NTSC-U version, don't let anyone tell you otherwise

Agreed, gameplay-wise it's unnecessary but the devs apparently wanted players to be able to see both the bad futures and the good ones when playing if they put in the effort.

Also I guess a good future version of every zone would be easier to complete than the other versions since there's only stage hazards to worry about. Still, I would have liked a good reason to visit the bad future first: like maybe to retrieve an item that gives you access to the teleporter in the past allowing you to destroy it, then a return trip to the future for some kind of reward. Understandably, doing all those steps increases the time to complete a level well beyond the 10 minute limit and is a very "un-Sonic-like" approach better reserved for the 3D games.

It's a neat idea but it sounds like it would be really annoying to play. They probably could've just added some full-sized generator or something that takes a few hits to defeat and made that an alternative way of saving the future if they wanted to even it out

>> No.10017237

Technically it does, but only going right will result in the bad ending.

I usually opt for the special stages to get the food ending, it's way too easy to screw up getting to the past, let alone finding the robot generator.

>> No.10017241

What they should have done
>act one of each zone is in the past
>if you grab the time stones, act two is the good future, otherwise it's the bad future
The way they implemented time travel is so needlessly convoluted and not fun.

If anything they could've just removed the Past concept entirely and put the capsules and generators in the Present stages. I agree that it's needlessly convoluted in its current implementation though

Try emulating the SEGA CD version. Modern ports are nice but I feel like there is something special about emulating the original games and learning more about the consoles and their libraries, especially when it comes to SEGA.

The better fix would be to just scrap the present, so you start off in the bad future and then must travel to the past to destroy the generator and fix the future. In my personal opinion though, they should have added another time period just so the game would last longer and we would have 7 more BGMs to feast on.

>> No.10017582

>>10017241
The problem is that the levels aren't long enough to really justify switching. The main point of the time travel mechanic seems to be creating a good future which is an easy version of the level as a reward, but that means every single level you are basically going to go out of your way to jump to the past, find the machine, and jump to the future. By the time you've done all that the stage is nearly over. Or you get the time stones and just jump to the future asap.

Once you understand how the game works you'll never go to bad future and once the time stones have been collected you'll never go to the past, bad future or stay in the present. It feels like there's almost no point in the majority of the time periods most of the time.

>> No.10017593

>>10017582
All time periods are made easier when you destroy the generator. In fact, regardless of being good or bad, I found the future version of all the stages to be always harder, ie. more littered with hazards and harder to time travel. The best use for the future periods would be to collect more rings and extra lives, if anything. The game is overall pretty easy, and it encourages you to plunge into the level geometry since there's no bottomless pits.

And they did try to create traps that force you into a bad future, mostly on Stardust Speedway. It's not a very effective hazard, but it's there and gives some purpose to the bad futures.

>In my personal opinion though, they should have added another time period just so the game would last longer and we would have 7 more BGMs to feast on.

They barely had the space to fit in 4 time periods, and even then they only squeezed 4 in because they scrapped the CD audio tracks for the past levels in favor of smaller tracker-style PCM music.

I know Sonic CD's whole gimmick was "ooh time travel!" but the mechanic should have been a secret unlockable after completing the game the first time w/ the Time Stones.

Then on the second playthrough the player can visit the past zones and make good futures to save a corrupted Little Planet piece by piece.
