I just played through this via the Sega Ages Switch re-release and holy crap was it bad to control. Alex Kidd always feels like he's walking on ice, especially after a jump. Plus his punch attacks range is small as well

Yeah, as others mentioned Alex Kidd isn't overrated generally. The remake in particular, from I've seen, is very "like or hate it" since it doesn't fix much of the original game's problems and the few fixes it does make are in a sub-mode that turns off achievements.
I played the remake and enjoyed it, although I turned on little bitch mode, and I do want to play at least the Ages version at some point.

Its a bit love it or hate it. but when its built into your shiny new master system II and you can't afford many games, you learn to love it. its not quite mario, but its good for what it is.

the nes does have more good games, but the master system holds a special place in my heart. it has a decent sized library of mostly solid titles. even the mega drive demakes have some charm to them. the system was powerful enough to at least kinda pull off 16 bit gameplay. is it really that hard to understand that some people like a system you don't?
