I knew she died but because of how the strategy guide was written I thought Cloud kills Aeris because it tells you to raise the sword. Then says after Aeris dies Jenova Life arrives. So was preparing myself for the horror of it. He already beat the shit out of her once. When I saw it really play out I cried. Thank you incompetent PS Max writer for not ruining it.

If you remember, Cloud saw a vision at Shinra HQ of Sephiroth killing Barret and Tifa. Barrett DID die, but then the time jannies brought him back. Now that the time jannies are gone, they won't be able to save Tifa when her time comes. Aerith is the safest character in the game because Sephiroth knows that killing her is what allowed her to go into the Lifestream and stop Meteor, whereas Tifa is Cloud's last living link to Nibelheim.

I remember thinking it was a pretty graphic death. There may not have been any blood or viscera but they definitely didn’t shy away from showing him impaling her completely. It was an intense cutscene, and the fact that she was actually dead for good from then on out was pretty wild.

Did they do it with as much dramatic effect as FFVII? I’ve seen anons try to downplay her death with this argument before, but I doubt there were very many (or any at all for that matter) other games that managed to present the death of a party member in such a tragic way.

Sephiroth kills Cloud's mother in the flashback. Tifa's father. Kills a bunch of people. fwiw, I think ff7 is a story of two scripts. You have one where Sephiroth is Jenova so acts mysterious and weird. And one where he is himself and acts like a generic anime villain.

I can't think of any off the top of my head but it was pretty common in those game for me to lose a party member I really liked, always pushed on though because I am not a saveshitter losing party members in those games is part of the experience. While they all came after FF7 Baldurs Gate, Fallout and even some strategy games like xcom and Jagged Alliance really had me just accepting that people die and it sucks but you gotta move on.
Wizardry kind of comes to mind but you can still resurrect party members in that, although it's a much more involved process than say the old FF games or even Ultima and I never really did it much because of that.
