You can't go wrong with Chrono Trigger.
It's one of those few special RPGs that is loved both by people who like RPGs and people who hate them.

There is a translated DS version as well as metal max 3 translated for DS as well. Not le retro but I don’t want people to miss out on vidya if they don’t have to.

it's very good and has one of the best OSTs ever

>> No.10012214

In addition to the above:
If you're willing to accept a remake of generally good quality, you should try Romancing SaGa 2 (and presumably 3; I haven't played that myself though)
If you're willing to accept a fan translation, you should try Rudra no Hihou

>> No.10012232

>>10011961
Might as well try Soul Blazer and Terranigma, they share the same theme.

There is a 1+2+3 rom who was english patched. And there is (addendum) a rebalanced version of this english patched rom who is even better. So grab an everdrive and play it, i had great moments on this game.

that's crazy. that's not me, but I also dropped the game 2 hours in. wasn't fun

>> No.10013943

The hardest part in the game is the first major boss (Spikey Tiger). After that your abilities broaden and it should be smooth sailing until the end. BUT it's a janky game in many ways and is best played by a thirteen-year-old, or at least by an adult with a childlike ability to relax into casual gameplay and one or two friends to play with (since it's a cooperative multiplayer game, if you want it to be). If you aren't that then yeah you might be better off moving on (and optionally also downloading the .spc files for it so you can listen to all the music).

>> No.10013950

>>10013943
(not to say you complained about difficulty or anything - it's just that that happens to be a point early in the game when it changes flavor somewhat and so it seemed like you might start enjoying it then, but really it's more likely that you wouldn't)

priority 1 for JRPG: SAY something
priority 2: have a story at all
priority 3: playable catgirl
priority 4: good chirpy sound effect that plays when you move your cursor in a menu
...
priority 384: fun mechanics that provide interesting freedoms

It does have a story, it's a solid simple story.
Just because it doesn't have some deep edgy story arc and billions dying doesn't make it bad or non-existant, meanwhile it has the best gameplay out of any of the first 6 by far.

>> No.10014220

funny because ff6 does have this, making it a perfect case study for scale alone not being enough to carry a story

FFV is the best of the bunch, and I don't even know what it's about. If there's not a cardinal direction in the text, I probably don't care.

ctrl-f "rudra", but seconding it has value too
it's the last Square-developed SFC game, and though the game isn't perfect, they went out with a bang

>> No.10015672

>>10014220
I don't even understand the point you are trying to make, I was very clearly referring to both FFIV and VI with my post. My point being that indeed scale alone doesn't make or break a story and while it can add to it and I won't deny that the story elements to 4 and 6 are superior to 5 that doesn't make 5 bad.

I like Paladin's Quest. I know it gets lots of hate, but as someone who has been around the block with 16-bit RPGs for the past 30 years, it's criticisms I find to be a refreshing change.

>pastel graphics are unique and keeps you playing to see what is next
>story takes a backseat to just grinding and exploring and fighting, which is what I really like in an RPG
>lots of characters to join your party
>combat is simple like Earthbound, but still pretty balanced and challening, and very quick in the menu system which makes it fun
>music is very good, especially battles which is what matters

I rented the game years ago and kept it for a few days and got pretty far in it. I never beat it but I remember being about 15-20hrs into the game. Ive made a few attempts to play the rom and beat it but I never stick with it since I have so many games im playing. Its def a game that the negatives didnt bother me that much and I just wanted to experience a world I barely remember but put alot of time into years ago. cool to see it mentioned.

Suggesting Metal Max Returns. It has a translation and is a remake or something of the og nes metal max game. alot of fun and worth playing thru.
