how come only 1st or 2nd party platformers have any degree of technical or artistic competency? I'm aware there was a glut of also ran mascot platformers but that alone doesn't explain why the bulk of this genre is just plain mediocre.

Platformers are much like coffee and wine. People only know the famous brands and they are too retarded and shit tasted to enjoy the lesser known brands. The best platformer is in fact an M&Ms game, but a palette trained on Mario and Sonic could not appreciate it.
