The programmer of NBA Jam admitted that he rigged Piston vs Bulls games if they were close.
>Did Scottie Pippen's ratings in the game really drop when he played certain teams?
>It's true, but only when the Bulls played the Pistons. If there was a close game and anyone on the Bulls took a last second shot, we wrote special code in the game so that they would average out to be bricks. There was the big competition back in the day between the Pistons and the Bulls, and since I was always a big Pistons fan, that was my opportunity to level the playing field.

you have to judge when it's gonna pop, and since the game is rare, it's not easy to practice and git gud

the rubberband ai in mario kart 64 cheats like a little bitch. same with f-zero games. the illusion of challenging opponents is there, but when you are better than the computer, the cracks begin to show bad.

I'm kind of pissed off that the Mario Team hid the 2 player VS mode of the mini games behind a secret code. I only found out about it as an adult, I would have enjoyed the fuck out of playing these with friends back then.
Well, now I play them with my gf, but still.

North American version is riddled with input reading and other nonsense. Supposedly the JP version fixes this but I haven't played it yet

For me it's the SNES version of Mario Kart. They not only didn't try to hide it, they POINTED OUT when the AI was cheating. On top of standard rubberband and AI only competing with human players instread of each other shenanigans the AI characters all had access to an infinite supply of powerups, most of which were exclusive to if the character was being controlled by the AI. The biggest cheaters were Mario and Luigi who had an infinite supply of stars. If an AI character behind you was about to use their power in 1 player mode, the map automatically changes into a rear-view mirror and flat out shows you the AI using it's cheat power against you.

They went an extra mile to make sure the computer will boycott the player.
For example, if you play with Mario, the best racer will always be DK Jr, followed by Peach.
So if you're in a particular hard circuit, like Special Cup 150 CC, you may think it would be a good idea to hit DK in the last lap, so he finishes in 3rd or 4th, giving you a comfortable advantage against him.
Guess what? If another racer, like Peach, gets more points than DK, then that racer automatically becomes the best racer for the following races. You didn't accomplish anything, you just swapped who's going screw you.

Hold down Select on the map screen and press X, X, Y, B, A to practice any minigame, in single or multiplayer modes.

you don't appreciate how precious few cycles are available for computing each frame.

Input reading was often just due to the limits of programming AI at the time. It's not quite as bad as something like Mortal Kombat, where AI outright pulls off impossible moves like firing charged attacks without charging them or having a wider throw range than the player.
