I'll give you a brief walkthrough.

1. Figure out the main CPU of the console for the game you want to disassemble. If doing Genesis, Motorola 68000.
2. Google "(cpu here) disassembler", find a disassembler.
3. Run your ROM through the disassembler. For the Genesis example, there will be some Z80 code in there as well, so you'll need to figure out what part of the code is Z80 and run that through a Z80 disassembler.
4. Understand the ASM for that CPU well enough to be able to figure out what the disassembled code is telling you, and start making comments.
5. If you can reassemble the code into a working rom with the same hash as the original, you got it right. If not, something isn't correct.

If you don't know ASM well, you won't be doing any disassembly work.

I’ve just started working on my first romhack. So far I’ve just been fucking with graphics, tweaking some values, and doing real time hex editing but it’s been fun.

Moving onto level editing soon which will be the fun part.

Depends on how much you know, and the game involved. If you understand the SNES's sound format pretty good and can ID sound data in a ROM without too much trouble, it might not be too hard. If you know none of the technical details involved and just suddenly decided you wanted to get into romhacking by changing out SNES music, you have a lot of learning to do and will likely give up long before you complete it.

Some games already have sound editing tools for them, like Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Super Mario World, and Super Mario RPG. Wouldn't take much experience or learning to be able to start creating with one of those.

All I want is a basic romhack of Tetris DX that fixes the piece randomization, to use the standard Random Generator that modern Tetris brand games do.

https://harddrop.com/wiki/Random_Generator

Tetrix DX has some really bad tetromino randomization at times. "I" piece droughts are common, but even trying to mitigate the droughts is difficult when it won't give you the L/S or J/Z pieces that help with shortening a stack.
I've had shit before where four of the five next tetrominos given were T pieces.

I still play Tetris DX quite regularly, it's a go-to quickplay thing for retro handheld devices and a good way to test out their buttons.

Not sure if it was 1 or 2, but it was really colorful and had music that people responded to with "peh peh peh" or some shit alluding to the vocals in the song. I looked at the list of hacks on Sonic Retro and didn't find it, checked the links you posted again and it doesn't seem to be there. I for some reason thought the title was Sonic Utopia before I realized that was the 3D classic Sonic fan game. Like I said there were only 2 (maybe 3) acts in the entire game, all of the same level. It was pretty much unrecognizable as Sonic 1 or 2, whichever it was a hack of, aside from Sonic's sprites being the same. I don't think there were any gameplay additions like the homing attack or anything. The levels were trippy and mechanical looking. The boss seemed to take place in some sort of colorful void with Sonic flying around in his animation from whenever he'd get swept through water tunnels or break away from the walls you can grip onto in Wing Fortress from Sonic 2. In the original thread someone posted a video of it being played on an actual Genesis, but the music lagged really bad and it didn't run perfectly. It honestly looked like a CD or 32X game with how many colors there were.

>> No.6104139

IMO the best way to play through Sonic 1 and 2 these days is Sonic Classic Heroes. The dev still seems to be working on it, at least it's thread on the Sonic Retro forums has people posting in it still including the dev, but there hasn't been a release since late 2013. It's still perfectly playable though, playing through it as just Sonic is a good time.

6106738

Puresabe recently released a Rockman 2020 New Years hack, a one-boss mini-game that looks fun to try out.

https://youtu.be/Q16sTVXyznA

I have the patcher from their site but I can't get it to work for whatever reason. bmaniw.exe always returns a system exception.
The ROM files I've put in the folder are correct, all six have the correct CRC32 checksum, so that isn't the issue.

Any clue what the problem is? Is it just a general Windows 10 issue, or a system language issue or something? I can see that the executable is working from the included info.txt and patch.txt files.
It's a pretty unique patcher in that it's manipulating multiple binaries, not like your conventional single-rom patch.

Double checking it, it seems as though that the ROMs are definitely correct, they don't have iNES headers, which is probably why they wouldn't want to run in Nestopia but were fine running in Mesen.

I think it's more likely that the actual patching program itself is buggy, it looks like it was built in C#.

I had the same problem with the 2018 new years hack which has a similar patcher, which uses a .bat patcher instead of a windowed executable.

I was fairly sure that the ROM set I had was No-intro-NES-DAT, but it might not be, it was one I found on archive.org.

I've tried checking the ROMs that I do have with various tools and I'm not sure if they're headered or unheadered, but they seem to be unheadered. Their CRC32 checksum matches that in the patch.txt after all.

I've tried removing a header from these roms using NES mapper reader, but this results in the CRC32 checksum changing, which wouldn't be valid.

>> No.6107293

>>6107276
the patcher skips the first 16 bytes of the rom-files and then checks the remaining bytes if they match the checksum in patch.txt.

the no-intro-dats are made the same way when the rom-manager is set up properly: skipping the first 16 bytes (if the content of the file is starting with "NES" aka the iNES-header) and then doing the hashing on the remaining data.

apparently, your files have no header (the first 16 bytes) and that's why it crashes at that stage, because it gets less data than expected.

add a generic header to the files and the patching will work.

>> No.6107305

Instead of adding headers you can try to change the six entries in patch.txt from

What's a good SMW hack for someone who has never played more than a few levels because the most high-profile hacks are hard?

Beat the game, including the star world levels. Then you might stand a chance with The Second Reality Project Reloaded. That's about as easy as SMW romhacks get. After that it's a sliding scale all the way to Kaizo.

Just finished Mega Man & Bass with the character switching and multi-equipment patches.

It's a massive improvement for the better, being able to complete the CD collection in a single game save and being able to take advantage of all the equipment upgrades simultaneously, which really dampens the game's harsh difficulty.

The game still has some flaws but this is the best way to play it.

Character swapping is neat, but being able to use all the equipment at once is game breaking.

Has anyone played Super Mario Niggers?

Yes, but it also makes it much more enjoyable when just playing it casually.

It has some of the hardest bosses in the series even when using their weaknesses, and the game already lacked anything like E-tanks to help the player through.

It's a game infamous for being inaccessible and frustrating, and the multiple equipment alleviates that. It doesn't make Burner Man any less terrible as a boss though, even if mostly due to the boss room and camera work employed.

Sounds like one of those juvenile hacks that crudely edits sprites and text in-emulator to make everything rude.
