Always liked Unused, old versions, or cut stuff sneaking into official materials.
HL2 has a few.

Most fans know, but Pic was on the HL2 box, which is an E3 version of City 17 Plaza.

Iirc, the back cover has images that are different to the retail version too. The steam images years ago used to have tons too like different zombie designs and pictures of alyx wearing a green outfit.

HL2 has so much content cut from it that the final version feels like a completely different game.

it's probably up there with MGS2, halo 2 (although what was cut from halo 2 effectively made it into halo 3) and the not retro new vegas & security breach where i'd love to play a director's cut of what was actually planned and what could've been than what we actually got.

true. For me, I'd also want Alien Soldier, Spyro Enter the Dragonfly, Smash Melee, MGSV of course, and Twinsanity.
Love to see the Alternate Timeline where those games had more dev time.

strider on pc engine was an absolute mess of development hell

one thing hidden in the game's code is that there were 2 planned extra stages rather than just 1, it was supposed to take place before the final level
